Missouri State falls at North Dakota; Bearcats extend Div. II-best home winning streak

North Dakota piled up 515 yards of offense Saturday in handing Missouri State a 48-31 defeat at Grand Forks, N.D.

Seventh-ranked Missouri State (2-3, 0-2) led late in the second quarter, but then the Fighting Hawks came to life: North Dakota (3-2, 2-1) scored on six straight possessions to flip the script in a Missouri Valley Football Conference showdown at the Alerus Center.

Missouri State quarterback Jason Shelley finished 24-of-39 for 271 yards and three touchdowns. He was not intercepted but was sacked twice.

North Dakota running back Tyler Hoosman racked up 147 yards on 16 carries, scoring once, and teammates Tommy Schuster and Quincy Vaughn each had a hand in two TDs from the quarterback position.

The Bears return to action next Saturday at home against Southern Illinois.

Northwest Missouri State 16, Missouri Western 3: The 12th-ranked Bearcats’ defense came through in a big way at home, holding the Griffons without a TD. Northwest (4-1, 4-1) won its 15th consecutive home game, the longest active streak in NCAA Div. II. Junior Liberty High grad Robert Rawie ran for 84 yards and a first-half TD on 15 carries and sophomore kicker Cole Lammel was 3-of-3 on field goals. The Griffons (2-3, 2-3) didn’t score after halftime.

Central Missouri 35, Northeastern (Okla.) State 13: Redshirt sophomore quarterback Cedric Case passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third as the Mules took care of Northeastern, claiming their first victory of the season at Walton Stadium on Family Weekend. Case was 19 of 27 for 237 yards and one interception. He also ran for 36 yards on five carries as Central (1-4) rolled up 210 yards on the ground.

McKendree University 45, William Jewell 34: In a high-scoring affair and the Cardinals’ homecoming game, it was the visitors who celebrated a victory at Greene Stadium in Liberty Saturday afternoon. McKendree won its third straight, while William Jewell fell to 1-4 a week after winning its first game of the year. The Cardinals beat Kentucky Wesleyan last weekend.

Central Oklahoma 45, Lincoln 3: Central Oklahoma QB Stephon Brown threw for three touchdowns as the visitors routed Lincoln in Jefferson City. Jacob Delso caught two of Brown’s touchdown passes and finished with an even 100 yards on four receptions.

Pittsburg State 38, Missouri Southern 9: It was all Gorillas Saturday in Pittsburg, Kan., as Pitt State (5-0, 5-0) coasted past their neighbors from Joplin in the Hall of Fame Game at Carnie Smith Stadium. Chad Dodson Jr. was 12 of 19 for 201 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a score. All nine points for Missouri Southern (3-2, 3-2) came via Nick Williams field goals.

Emporia State 42, Washburn 35: A 21-point third quarter helped lift visiting Emporia State (3-2, 3-2) over the Ichabods Saturday in Topeka. Washburn (3-2, 3-2) countered with 21 of its own during a final-period rally that fell short. Both teams’ QBs threw for 4 TDs apiece: the Ichs’ Kellen Simoncic was 35 of 48 for 334 yards and one interception, while the Hornets got a 27-of-39, 300-yard outing from Braden Gleason, who was sacked three times.

Nebraska Kearney 38, Fort Hays State 20: The Lions were within striking distance through three quarters Saturday night, but a 17-point final period put the end to their hopes of heading home victorious. Fort Hays fell to 1-4; Nebraska Kearney improved to 4-1.
