Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has proved to be another critical hit from Tom Cruise.

The seventh overall film in the Mission: Impossible series is getting some of the highest praise in the history of the franchise – which is quite an accomplishment for a series that started 27 years ago.

While the film's Rotten Tomatoes score is still in flux due to the review embargo only lifting on Wednesday night (July 5), it currently stands at an incredible 98% fresh on the review aggregator.

Dead Reckoning Part One manages to top Mission: Impossible – Fallout's previous franchise high of 97% and is leagues above the series' low point – a 56% approval for Mission: Impossible 2.

Digital Spy wasn't quite as impressed with Dead Reckoning Part One as its predecessors, as we felt there was an imbalance between mind-blowing stunts and actual story advancement.

"The new movie is a step down from Fallout, but still a blockbuster that often delivers immersive and spectacular action that gets the adrenaline pumping like few other movies can," Ian Sandwell wrote in his DS review.

Highlights from other reviews are presented below:

The Wrap

"What better mission could there be this summer other than witnessing our perpetual cinematic maverick deliver yet another full-scale cinematic experience? Should you choose to accept it, of course."

The LA Times

"Dead Reckoning Part One doesn't just rack up the miles in style. Like so many globe-trotting thrillers and big-screen tourist brochures, it's also a gleaming advertisement for Hollywood itself."

Entertainment Weekly

"While the title might feel unwieldy, the film itself is anything but, its nearly three-hour running time passing as quickly as it takes a message to self-destruct."

Hollywood Reporter

"The strong cast, high-gloss production values and constant wow factor of the action offer plenty of distraction from the storytelling deficiencies."

Time

"The story exists only as flimsy interstitial tissue between the Tom-centric stunts, but maybe that’s enough. Ostensibly greater movies have given us less."

The Times

"It feels like a movie that's been assembled by an inattentive monkey, or a luckless studio intern who was handed a bucket of half-completed rushes and told, 'Go make a Covid-beating blockbuster out of that.'”

NME

"The plot borrows from Westworld and aims for cerebral but ends up coming out like a half-baked Christopher Nolan brain fart."

The film sets up an almighty cliffhanger for Cruise and co-writer/director Christopher McQuarrie in Dead Reckoning Part Two, but given Cruise's incredible track record of late, he could very well stick the landing!

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is released in UK cinemas on July 11 and in US cinemas on July 12.
