Missing Houston Woman Found Safe 2 Weeks After She Disappeared on Morning Walk with Her Dog

• Although authorities previously reported that her dog had been found, it turned out that canine just looked similar to Johnson's dog

A recent college graduate who had been missing in the Houston area for two weeks has been found safe, authorities said.

Christina Johnson, 27, who disappeared from her Alief home while walking her dog Max on the morning of March 6, was found late last week near the University of Houston downtown campus, her father, Emmanuel Johnson, told NBC affiliate KPRC-TV.

Texas EquuSearch, a nonprofit organization which had been involved in the search for Johnson, also confirmed that the woman had been found, as had her 10-year-old mixed-breed dog, Max.

"She was wandering," Emmanuel Johnson told Inside Edition. "We're trying to find out what happened."

One week after she disappeared, a woman claimed to have found Johnson's dog about 7.5 northeast of her home and returned him to her family, but it turns out that the dog was not Max, authorities said.

Houston police — who are actively investigating the details of Johnson’s disappearance, per KPRC — did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Christina’s father previously told the news station that his daughter may have been dealing with mental health issues.

Christina, a former youth tennis champion, recently graduated from Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia, and was staying with her family at the time of her disappearance, CBS affiliate KHOU-TV reported.

While Emmanuel told KPRC that he would offer further details about his daughter’s disappearance at a future time, the family has adopted the dog who was found wandering in a rainstorm and mistakenly identified as Max.

The mixed-breed dog now goes by the name Jack, per Inside Edition.
