Minnie Driver Spills Devastating Details About Matt Damon Breakup 25 Years Later

Minnie Driver and Matt Damon

Minnie Driver unexpectedly spilled devastating details about her breakup with Matt Damon 25 years after they dated.

In 1997, Driver met Damon on the set of Good Will Hunting, and the young actors eventually became a couple—although they split in 1998. Flash-forward to today, and the Cinderella (2021) actress shared details about their breakup in the comments of an Instagram post.

The post in question is a clip the Movie Shmood Instagram account shared from Damon and Good Will Hunting co-star/co-writer Ben Affleck's acceptance speech for Best Original Screenplay at the 1998 Oscars. As a very young Damon and Affleck nervously thanked individuals who made the movie possible, the camera panned to each person. However, when the shot cut to Driver—who portrayed played Skylar, Damon's love interest in Good Will Hunting—the actress looked curiously forlorn.

In the comments, Driver acknowledged her out-of-place expression, writing, "My face 😂😂😂😂❤️." She also responded to an Instagram user who commented, "Minnie looks so sad."

"Matt had ended our relationship a few weeks before this, and was at the Oscars with his new gf... I was devastated," Driver explained. "Wish I could have celebrated more as it was an amazing moment for all of us, and for this wonderful film! ❤️"

While promoting her 2022 memoir, Managing Expectations, Driver opened up about how difficult her and Damon's breakup was—especially they rose to fame in Hollywood.

"I don't care who you are, that is agony and it's like a strange, surreal dream," she told Entertainment Tonight. "But I know he didn't put that picture there. It's so tricky, because it's not deliberate. He couldn't have helped how famous he became and how his life was being picked over, in the same way that mine was."

Twenty-five years later, both Damon and Driver have moved on romanically. Damon married Luciana Barroso in 2005, and they share three daughters, Isabella, Gia and Stella. Meanwhile, Driver has been dating Addison O'Dea since 2019, and welcomed a son in 2008 with Timothy J. Lea.
