Minneapolis man charged with murder in collision that killed his 2 young passengers

A Minnesota man previously charged in a collision that left two of his passengers dead now faces third-degree murder charges in the deaths of the two young men.

James Blue, 51, of Minneapolis-area Orono, is charged with two counts of third-degree murder in the deaths of Mack Motzko, 20, and Sam Schuneman, 24, The Associated Press reported Friday.

Schuneman and Motzko — the son of University of Minnesota men’s hockey coach Bob Motzko — were Blue’s passengers in Blue’s Bentley on July 24 which he allegedly drove up to 99 mph before crashing in a wooded area near his home.

He had previously been charged with two counts each of criminal vehicular operation with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08% or more as well as criminal vehicular homicide for operating a vehicle in a grossly negligent manner.

Blue, according to criminal charges, drank shots of liquor and consumed THC gummies prior to the crash, the Star Tribune reports.

Updated charges obtained by the outlet show that Schuneman and Motzko had been at a restaurant and, less than an hour before the collision, met Blue, whose house they were invited to by a mutual friend.

While Motzko had no alcohol in his system, Schuneman had been drinking but was not driving that night, said the charges, according to the outlet.
