Minecraft Fans Rally Around Petition To Stop New Mob Vote

Minecraft Mob Vote 2023

In just a few days, Minecraft developer Mojang will hold its annual Minecraft Live event, outlining the future of the game and showing off all the fun things the team has been working on. One of the mainstays of the event is its big mob vote, which has fans vote between three different potential mobs, with the winner being added to the game. This year, though, the year in which crabs could be coming to Minecraft, the vote has attracted a lot of controversy.

For whatever reason, this year, there are a bunch of vocal Minecraft fans who think that Mojang and the Minecraft team at Microsoft are coasting a bit. They believe that making fans choose between mobs rather than just implementing all three is just not good enough.

Thus, fans have turned to the trusty Change.org petition, with almost 400,000 people having signed it at the time of writing. The petition calls on Mojang to “put an end to the scrapping of great ideas,” and accuses the mob vote of fracturing the community.

“The Mob Vote generates engagement by tearing the community apart, leaving fantastic ideas on the cutting room floor, and teasing content that will never be seen in the game,” the petition reads, “That, mixed with the fact that Mojang somehow releases less content WITH Microsoft's backing than they did without, means players see minimal content to the game they love, and watch as possibly the one thing to get them to play again is ripped from them.”

That’s a bit dramatic, but you can kind of see where they’re coming from, if only a little bit. Content updates for Minecraft have slowed down somewhat since the game was brought under the Microsoft banner, but there could be a number of reasons for that, including the move to a new engine in the Bedrock Edition of the game, and the need to ensure parity between a wide range of different devices.

The petition goes on to say that the anger reached a boiling point after years of discontent with prior mob votes, with some very popular potential mobs in previous years’ votes losing because of the influence of content creators mobilizing their fan bases. Obviously it’s hard to say what goes on behind the scenes, and how much of a difference those votes make, but there’s no denying that big content creators have been directing their fans to vote one way or another.

So why is this year the one with all the controversy? We think it’s probably because all of the mobs included in this year’s mob vote are pretty cool. In case you missed it, Minecraft’s 2023 mob vote is between crabs, armadillos, and penguins — all of which sound incredible. Here at GLHF we overwhelmingly voted for the penguin, but we’ll have to wait and see how the community votes, and how Mojang responds to some very angry fans.

Voting for mob vote event opens on October 13 at 1pm EDT and ends 48 hours later, at the start of the Minecraft Live stream.
