Minden, Iowa man dies from injuries sustained in tornado

A man injured during a tornado that touched down in Minden, Iowa has died, Pottawattamie County Emergency Management officials confirmed Sunday.

The Minden resident was found after the tornado hit and was taken to a local hospital Friday, April 26. He was later transported to a trauma center in Omaha. He passed away in the overnight hours Saturday, according to Pottawattamie emergency management director Doug Reed.

Officials declined to release further identification information about the man.

Friday night storm devastates small town

Authorities in the small southwest Iowa town declared a state of emergency after the tornado damaged 180 homes, injuring four people.

Reed said roughly 40 percent of those homes were destroyed. Drivers in the town of about 600 people were redirected Saturday as workers tried to clean up massive debris left by the twister.

Three Pottawattamie County residents were injured on Friday night, according to Reed. They were treated and released.

Since then, three more have suffered minor injuries during clean-up and recovery, including one responder and two community members.

Minden officials set Sunday curfew

Local officials implemented a town curfew from 10 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday, April 29.

Only residents and emergency responders will be allowed to enter the community starting at 8 a.m. Monday.

"It's just responders, residents, utility companies, and folks doing work," Reed said. "We're not open to the general community."

Reed said information on how to help the community affected by the tornado will be released later on Sunday, when emergency management officials assess "disaster survivor needs."

The emergency management official said no additional supplies were needed as of Sunday.

How many tornadoes hit Iowa on April 26?

The National Weather Service in Des Moines posted on social media Saturday that, according to preliminary reports, at least 10 tornadoes touched down in central Iowa on April 26. Six of those tornadoes have been confirmed as EF-2.

NWS Omaha issued 42 tornado warnings on Friday, the weather service reported.

A pair of EF-2 tornadoes traveled parallel to each other near Afton, while the weakest and shortest-lived tornado, classified at EF-0, was confirmed near Maffit in Madison County. A tornado near Mount Ayr is believed to have traveled 26 miles, lasting nearly 45 minutes.

The National Weather Service has not yet categorized the Minden tornado that destroyed the small western Iowa town on Friday.
