Milwaukee Public Market voted best public market in the nation in USA TODAY's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards

The Milwaukee Public Market, 400 N. Water St., was chosen as the best public market in the nation in USA TODAY's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards.

For the contest, USA TODAY 10Best invited a panel of industry experts to nominate their favorites in four categories: best farmers markets, best food hall, best food tour and best public market. After experts narrowed down the categories, 10Best editors vetted the nominations and chose finalists for readers to vote for between March 18 and April 5.

The Milwaukee Public Market opened in 2005 and is owned by the Historic Third Ward Business Improvement District 2. It's managed by Paul Schwartz.

There are 19 vendors at the market. The longest-standing are West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe,St. Paul Fish Company and C. Adam's Bakery, which all joined in July 2005 when the market opened. Aladdin - Taste of the East joined shortly after, in November.

Freese’s Candy Shoppe is the newest addition to the market, joining in March after Kehr's Candies left.

The market is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.
