A standoff that left a Milwaukee police officer shot and injured outside a home on the city's northwest side near Lincoln Park has ended, according to family and police at the scene.

Police were apparently involved in an hours-long standoff Tuesday with people inside a duplex near West Fairmount Avenue and North Green Bay Avenue, family of those inside the home said.

Milwaukee police call logs show that officers responded to a "subject with gun" call in the area at 9:08 a.m.

The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m., according to the Milwaukee Fire Department. The family member, Tyquana Payne, said someone from inside the house shot and injured a Milwaukee officer, and officers fired back. She heard 10 gunshots.

"It was so scary," she said.

Payne and her sister, Tiara, said family members live in an upper unit of the duplex. They said their aunt, who is in her 60s, lives with two sons in their 20s in the home.

Tiara, who declined to provide her last name, said shortly before 1 p.m. that an adult had been taken into custody. She did not say how she knew the person. She said the incident in her relatives’ home involved a domestic violence situation that escalated before and after police arrived.

She said there were seven children all under the age of seven inside the home at one point Tuesday.

“Domestic violence is real,” Tiara said. “You got to know how to get out of those situations.”

Milwaukee police confirmed in a brief statement that an officer had been injured. By 1:30 p.m., many of the police and emergency vehicles were leaving the scene.

The Milwaukee Fire Department declined further comment. The Police Department was still preparing for a news conference at the scene.
