Millersport news: Rockin' the Block to be held Saturday through Monday

The 2nd annual Rockin’ The Block 2024 will be held Memorial Day weekend at the Historic Lions’ Park, 2905 Chautauqua Boulevard in Millersport. This is a free event which will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25 and run until 11:30 p.m. with the same hours on Sunday, and will run from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, May 27. Thin Line Fitness of Ohio has partnered with Millersport Lions for this Memorial Day Weekend Event supporting first responders, veterans and small businesses. The event will feature a three-day concert, car/bike show, bounce houses, first responder and veteran organizations/special demonstrations. There will be over 125 vendors, food trucks, a fire safety house, large raffle, Memorial Day parade, cornhole tournament, and more. Alumni banquet

The 95th Millersport High School Alumni Banquet will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, in the Walnut Township District Auditorium, 11850 Lancaster Street in Millersport.

Senior citizens

The Millersport Senior Citizens met May 17 at the Millersport Lions Clubhouse. President Richard Neff welcomed the 23 members present and introduced new member Shirley Jacks. He opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Rosie Brookover offered the prayer before the potluck lunch.

Following the potluck lunch Kristin Glasure, President and CEO of Fairhope Hospice and Palliative Care spoke on the various services provided. Fairhope is the home of the Pickering House located at 282 Sells Road in Lancaster. Fairhope provides services for seven counties in Central Ohio.

President Neff conducted the business meeting. Several member concerns were listed. Door prizes were won by Karen Mosher, Carol King, Pam Ricketts, Judy Harris, Rosie Brookover, Andrew Proud, Vivian Crist, John Hammel, Anita Bailey and Debbie Gant. The meeting was adjourned for cards and Bingo.

The group meets the first and third Fridays of the month. Anyone who is 55 years of age and older is encouraged to join for fellowship, lots of good food and fun.

Students of the Month

The Students of the Month for the month of April at Millersport Junior/Senior High School are:

  • 8th Grade – Hunter Blackburn and Lorelei Duke

  • 9th Grade – Klaire Barton and Cash Inman

  • 12th Grade – Jae Slocumb and Chloe Schilling-Atwood

Board of Education

The Walnut Township Local School District Board of Education met in regular session May 13 in the elementary media center. During the time for public participation the 2024 Spelling Bee Winners were recognized. Staff members and students who helped with the weight room clean-up were also recognized. The Student Liaison reported on concerns at the junior/senior high building.

The board entered into executive session to consider the employment and/or discipline of a public employee.

The Treasurer’s Report including the Five-Year Forecast and Capital Plan were approved.

Elementary Principal Kim Mathews reported on end-of-the-year activities and plans for changes to be made for the next school year. Megan Terry, Junior/Senior High School Principal’s report listed the April Students of the Month, Testing, First Aid/CPR Training, National Honor Society Induction, Spring Concert and Art Show, Prom, Awards Assemblies, Baccalaureate, Senior Activities and Commencement.

A technology update was given by Mr. Brownfield. A report of the Personnel and Finance Committee was given. Superintendent Radulovich reported on needed repairs at the junior/senior high school building, HVAC issues, testing and academic planning with professional development.

A Resolution of Necessity for the renewal of an emergency tax levy was approved to be placed on the Nov. 5 ballot.
