The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2022 NFL draft with a clear need at quarterback after the retirement of longtime quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

When it came time to make a selection at No. 20, the Steelers had their pick of the litter. No quarterbacks were selected in the first 19 picks, somewhat of a surprise among NFL analysts.

However, that left the Steelers with a tough decision: go with Pitt’s Kenny Pickett or Liberty’s Malik Willis? Pittsburgh ended up selecting Pickett, and head coach Mike Tomlin suggested it wasn’t close.

He also expects Pickett to come in and compete for the starting job right away.

“Mike Tomlin said Kenny Pickett will compete to start in 2022 with Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph,” Steelers insider Ed Bouchette said. “Kevin Colbert said they had him rated much higher than the other QBs.”

Earlier this offseason, the Steelers signed veteran quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to a two-year deal. He signed a borderline backup quarterback deal, which meant the Steelers were always looking to the draft for their future starter.

Now they have him.
