After the Dallas Cowboys 2021 season came to an abrupt end over the weekend, the organization has been left to search for answers about where to go from here. One of the potential moves that’s seemingly become an option is for the franchise to part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy.

However, McCarthy doesn’t think the situation is headed in that direction.

In a press conference on Wednesday, a few days after the Cowboys’ 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, McCarthy revealed that he’s met with owner Jerry Jones multiple times since the Wild Card game. He said that the two have had “very positive conversations” in their meetings.

McCarthy also made clear that he has no concerns about his job security, according to The Athletic’s Jon Machota.

McCarthy’s assessment is right in line with what Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said earlier this week. He remained “absolutely confident” that the second-year head coach would be back in Dallas next season.

McCarthy has posted an 18-15 record since taking over the Cowboys in 2020, but that record isn’t an entirely accurate reflection of what he’s been able to accomplish. Dallas bounced back from a frustrating, injury-ridden 6-10 season last year to go 12-5 and win the NFC East in 2021. McCarthy was a major reason for that, along with the return of quarterback Dak Prescott.

However, there are others that would argue the head coach’s positive traits don’t outweigh his shortcomings. McCarthy’s clock management has been called into question time and time again and the Cowboys were the most undisciplined team in the NFL this season, leading the league with 127 penalties.

At this point, McCarthy’s return to Dallas seems pretty much like a guarantee, but he’ll need to prove that he’s the right man for the job next season.

If he doesn’t, he could very well find himself out of a job in 2023.
