The Dallas Cowboys were done in by a number of issues during Sunday’s wild card loss to the San Francisco 49ers. One of the main problems was penalties.

In a continuation of a season-long trend, Dallas committed 14 penalties for 89 yards against the 49ers. During the regular season, the Cowboys led the league in penalties with 127.

They were docked 1,103 yards in penalties, second only to the Las Vegas Raiders. It’s no surprise that head coach Mike McCarthy has zeroed in on penalties as a point of emphasis this offseason.

McCarthy told reporters today penalties will be the Cowboys’ “No. 1 focus” over the next several months, acknowledging that his team committed “far too many” this year.

There has been some speculation that McCarthy won’t be back in 2022 after how this season ended, but for now, the Cowboys have not indicated they are moving on from the veteran head coach.

Even if they did, McCarthy’s problems would just be inherited by his replacement. Whoever is in charge of Dallas next season has to make sure the team is much more disciplined than it was in 2021.
