The Dallas Cowboys got the disheartening news on Wednesday that star pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence suffered a serious foot injury in practice. Today, head coach Mike McCarthy offered an update.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, McCarthy announced that Lawrence has undergone surgery on his broken foot. He is now slated to miss six to eight weeks as he recovers.

However, it doesn’t appear that Lawrence’s season is done just yet. McCarthy added that he believes Lawrence will return at some point this season.

In the meantime though, the Cowboys pass rush is likely to struggle. Lawrence has led the Cowboys in sacks in three of the last four years.

Between 2017 and 2020, Lawrence never missed a game and recorded 36.5 sacks. He made the Pro Bowl in 2017 and 2018 thanks to back-to-back double-digit sack seasons.

Lawrence had five tackles and one forced fumble in the Cowboys’ season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Defense was already one of the Cowboys’ weakest points heading into this season. Last year, they gave up 473 points – their most of the 16-game era and 28th in the league.

The end result was a 6-10 record, though the team’s offense surely contributed to their struggles last year.

Quarterback Dak Prescott is back to take some of the heat off the Cowboys defense. But the defense will still need to give up much less than 30 points per game if they want to be playoff contenders.

The Cowboys play the Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday. The game will air on FOX at 4:25 p.m. EST.
