Miguel Cabrera could collect his 3,000th career hit Thursday afternoon against the New York Yankees. Based on his reaction to the possibility, the Detroit Tigers icon may relish reaching the major milestone at the Evil Empire’s expense.

Per Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group, the 39-year-old slugger was asked about notching the landmark hit against the Bronx Bombers. He answered by recalling a team scout who once offered a wildly incorrect assessment of his future outlook.

“A scout from the Yankees told me, ‘If you make it, it’s going to be as a pitcher.'” Cabrera said. “He got fired.”

Of course, Cabrera made it as one of this generation’s most fearsome hitters. Along with his 2,999 knocks, the designated hitter — who began his career at third base and the outfield before shifting to first — deposited his 500th career home run last August.

Only five active hitters have reached 2,000 career hits, but Cabrera will soon join Albert Pujols as the only other one with 3,000. The elusive club currently consists of 32 players.

Cabrera, a career .315/.423/.540 hitter versus lefties, will bat cleanup against Yankees southpaw Jordan Montgomery in a Thursday matinee at Comerica Park starting 1:10 p.m. ET. If he goes hitless, he’ll have three more games to record a hit at home before Detroit takes a six-game road trip next week.
