How Midlands teams fared in SC state swimming meets, golf qualifiers

The state swimming championships and state golf qualifiers took place over the last few days.

Here is a look at how Midlands athletes fared in the competitions:

SCHSL swimming

Class 5A Boys: Patrick Quirk won the 100 backstroke, was second in the 100 butterfly and was part of Spring Valley’s first-place 200 freestyle relay and second-place 200 individual medley on Monday in helping the Vikings to a fourth place finish.

Fort Mill won the boys championship.

Lexington’s Noah Blashka won the 100 freestyle and was second in the 200 freestyle. The Wildcats finished 14th. Chapin finished ninth and was led by Nate Sherrard’s third-place finish in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

River Bluff finished seventh. Grant Lohr was third in the 100 butterfly and was part of the 200 relay team, which finished second.

Class 5A Girls: Chapin was the top local team, finishing second behind Fort Mill.

Four Eagles swimmers had top-three finishers in Ella O’Shaughnessey (3rd, 200 freestyle), Reagan Sherrard (2nd 50 freestyle), Jackie Bonavilla 3rd (100 butterfly) and Maggie Hankins (3rd, 100 freestyle). Chapin’s relay teams also finished second in the 200 individual medley and 400 freestyle.

River Bluff’s Maecy Wells won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Dutch Fork’s Emily McMahan won the 200 individual medley and was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team. The Silver Foxes finished seventh as a team. Lexington’s Hanna Eckart was third in the 500 freestyle.

Class 4A Boys: Irmo’s Emmanuel Gadson won the 100 butterfly, was second in 100 breaststroke and third in 100 freestyle. Yellow Jackets’ Ryan Folding was second in the 50 freestyle. As a team in Irmo finished eighth.

Westwood’s Ewan Dalrymple was third in the 100 butterfly and Aaron Willis was third in backstroke. The Redhawks finished seventh.

Eastside won the boys team championship.

Class 4A Girls: AC Flora’s Ellie Porter was the lone area swimmer in the top third and was third in the 100 breaststroke. Eastside won the team championship.

Class 3A Boys: Gray Collegiate’s John Coker was second in the breaststroke and third in the 100 butterfly to lead area finishers. Newberry’s Grant Smith was third in the 200 freestyle.

St. Joseph’s won the team championship.

Class 3A Girls: Gray Collegiate had its best finish in school history with a runner-up finish behind Bishop England.

GC’s KP Coker won the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley and Peighton Johnson won the 200 freestyle. Sabey Coker was second in the 100 butterfly and Maddison Mitton was second in 100 freestyle. The War Eagles’ relay teams won the 200 individual medley and were second in the 200, 400 freestyle.

Camden’s Grace Boyce was third in the 100 breaststroke.

SCISA Swimming

Class 4A Boys: Hammond finished second behind champion Porter-Gaud.

The Skyhawks’ Alex Magargle won the 100 backstroke and was second in the 200 freestyle/ Heath Schuch won the 500 freestyle and Kirby Johns was third in 50 freestyle. Hammond won the 400 freestyle relay and was second in the individual medley.

Ben Lippen’s Nolen Crisp was second in the 200 IM and third in 500 freestyle as the Eagles finished fifth. Jay Sauls was second in the 100 breaststroke and BL was second in the 400 freestyle and third in 200 freestyle.

Cardinal Newman’s Lawrence Jones was second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 200 IM as the Cards finished sixth. Dylan Murphy was third in the 200 freestyle.

Class 4A Girls: Cardinal Newman finished second and Hammond was third behind first-place Porter-Gaud.

CN’s Leighton Maxfield was second in the 200, 500 freestyle and Belle Gill was second in the 50 freestyle and third in 100 freestyle. The Cards relay teams were second in 400 freestyle and third in 200 freestyle.

Hammond’s Stella Schuch won the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. Gracie Thames was third in the 100 backstroke and Skyahwks’ relay team was third in 400 freestyle.

Ben Lippen’s Georgia Crisp won the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. The Falcons were second in the 200 freestyle.

Girls Golf

Class 5A: Chapin won the Upper State team championship and Blythewood’s Caroline Hawkins was medalist in the event.

The Eagles finished with a 307, two shots better than Dorman. Chapin’s Mia Andrade was fourth with a 71.

Hawkins fired a 66 to win by four strokes and help the Bengals to a sixth-place finish.

In the Lower State, Lexington and River Bluff qualified for next week’s state tournament. The Wildcats were third with a 331, three shots back of first-place Wando.

River Bluff was sixth with a 355.

The Class 5A state championship will be Oct. 23-24 at Mid-Carolina.

Class 4A: AC Flora qualified for the state championship with a fourth-place finish in the lower state. The Falcons shot a 353. May River finished first with a 313.

The 4A championship is Oct. 23-24 at Saluda Valley Country Club.

Class 3A: Camden finished second in the Lower State championship with a 334. Waccamaw was first with a 334.

Swansea’s Benedicta Pollard (81) qualified as an individual.
