Middletown corner near Core Creek Park being replaced with roundabout. Prepare for detour

A new roundabout will control the corner of Langhorne-Yardley Road and Bridgetown Pike, and other improvements will be made at Langhorne- Yardley and Woodbourne roads, with the work beginnign Tuesday, PEnnDOT announced just before the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend on Thursday.

The $10.6 million transformation from a Y-intersection into a roundabout will improve congestion and safety, according to a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation advisory on its website. The work will continue through the summer, and motorists should expect delays through August.

"Under this contract, PennDOT’s contractor will construct a single-lane roundabout and realign the roadway; install upgraded traffic signals, stormwater management, ADA curb ramps, signage, and lighting; perform resurfacing operations; and improve mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists," reads the alert that the agency shared on its social media pages.

The single-lane roundabout will slow traffic, officilals said.

During construction, there will be a detour, which was nto clearly specified in the alert, but a map shows it is about 5.4 miles around Core Creek Park.

A second intersection at Langhorne-Yardley Road and Woodbourne Road Intersection will realign "the northern leg of Woodbourne Road." Each approach to the busy intersectionwill get an "auxiliary" turning lane. Currently traffic backs up as vehicles wait for approaching traffic to clear to make turns.

PennDOT also said the "eastern leg of Woodbourne Road will be widened to allow for a left turn lane on Langhorne-Yardley Road approaching Erica Drive," a residential street off Langhorne-Yardley.

The section between the two intersections getting improved along Langhorne-Yardley Road, at Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road, will also be enhanced to better align the road "to improve sight distance and widening of lanes and shoulders," PennDOT wrote in its advisory.

Other improvements include:

  • Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) installed at nearby pedestrian crossings including those on Woodbourne Road at Core Creek Park and Maple Point Middle School

  • Larger paved shoulders.

  • New paved paths along Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road to connect these intersections to the Core Creek Park.

  • Sidewalks constructed along the southern side of Langhorne-Yardley Road between Woodbourne Road and Briggs Road.

The work will cause periodic lane closures during the week.
