Middleboro man stumbles onto love of baking homemade cookies. What makes them so special?

MIDDLEBORO — Deep into the perils of COVID-19, one local man found his passion for baking essentially by accident, causing him to launch Danny’s Dozens.

One night, Daniel Gavigan was sifting through his kitchen to find a late-night snack, and to his surprise, he found one, but not exactly.

The 28 year old found a package of chocolate chips with a recipe on the back.

Gavigan read the instructions carefully and thought it would be “easy.”

Late-night snack turned business venture

“Baking cookies is kind of an art, it seems easier than it actually is,” Gavigan said.

While baking the cookies from the ingredients he scraped together in his home, Gavigan discovered a newfound love for baking. He continued trying new recipes until he was satisfied.

“It took me about six to eight months to create a chocolate chip chunk recipe I was happy with. I was never the best cook, but I always enjoyed sweets and always had a huge sweet tooth,” Gavigan said.

What's makes Danny's Dozens cookies so special?

Now, you may wonder what makes Danny’s Dozens unique from other artisan bakers in the area?

Well, the answer is simple to Gavigan: It’s the ingredients and the “love” that goes into every batch.

“My cookies are baked with organic ingredients, small batches I make myself, and are pretty much my creations. I’ve wasted a lot of eggs, and it was trial and error,” Gavigan said.

Danny's Dozens got its big break due to social media and word-of-mouth recommendations.

Some of Gavigan's most popular cookies are chocolate chip chunk, "My Name Is Earl" (infused with Earl Grey tea) and "Browned Buttered Bourbon Pecan."

The baker uses raw chocolate bars and cuts them to make thick chunks that will ooze as you take your first bite.

What also sets the recipes apart is the imported vanilla bean paste and the sea salt flake finish that puts the flavors “over the edge.”

Gavigan loves the aromas of the fresh Earl Grey tea he uses to infuse his cookie batches.

Baking turned into therapy

Baking is a ”huge distraction” and a beloved hobby for the young entrepreneur.

When Gavigan enters the kitchen, all his problems melt away. It's just him and his ingredients here to make a perfect harmony.

Since COVID-19 ended, Gavigan has been able to sell his cookies at craft fairs, school fundraisers and local pop-up events in the area.

So far, Gavigan bakes part-time but hopes to launch his business full-time and take over the baking industry with his unique flavors.
