Middle school in Topeka receives the all-clear after a possible gas leak

Landon Middle School was evacuated before school started Thursday because of a possible gas leak.

The Topeka Fire Department was called at 7:30 to see if there was a leak at Landon's location at 731 S.W. Fairlawn Road. The fire department responded with two engine companies, one truck company, one hazmat truck and one battalion chief.

Students evacuated because of possible gas leak

While the possible leak was investigated, students evacuated under heavy rain came down through Topeka.

Parents in a local Facebook chat had reported the incident, warning other parents of Landon students to keep their kids home or drop them off at different locations, such as Sk8away, a nearby church and Topeka West High School.

Landon Middle School got the all-clear 45 minutes later

The middle school received the all-clear from the fire department about 45 minutes after the call and students were returned to the middle school for class.

The school sent a notice to parents about the possible leak around 8:15 and informed them their children could return to school.

"Thank you for your cooperation, the local authorities have given clearance for us to return into the school," the email read. "Students are returning from the church and from Topeka West at this time. School will resume as normal within the hour. Again, thank you for supporting us in taking the added safety step out of an abundance of caution."
