Here’s how Middle Georgians can celebrate, honor Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend

Middle Georgians will have several opportunities locally to celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Here’s a list of celebrations and activities in Middle Georgia this weekend.

Macon-Bibb MLK Memorial March

Macon-Bibb County will host a memorial march Monday. The march will start in four different locations: the north march will start Booker T. Washington Community Center, south at Memorial Gym, east at Rosa Jackson Center and west at Frank Johnson Recreation Center. All marches will converge at City Hall.

  • Where: Government center in downtown Macon, across Poplar Street from Rosa Parks Square

MLK Breakfast: Living the Dream

A community breakfast downtown will precede the parade as well. Breakfast costs $6 for kids and $12 for adults.

  • Where: Turner Tabernacle Church on Third Street, downtown Macon

Church celebration

There is a church celebration following the Macon march at Steward Chapel AME church. The event will feature keynote speaker James Mann, a reverend with the Evangelical Ministers Alliance.

  • When: Monday, Jan. 16 at 12:30 p.m.

  • Where: Steward Chapel AME Church on Forsyth Road

Teen Summit and Jubilee Celebration

The Tubman Museum in downtown Macon will host multiple events on MLK Day, beginning with a 9 a.m. breakfast followed by a 1:30 p.m. teen talk led by minister Tonya Parker. The Jubilee celebration will have art, music, and food. The celebration at 3 p.m. highlights a special emancipation exhibit featuring art from the personal collection of Mike Glenn, a former Atlanta Hawks player. The $5 admission fee includes all events.

Houston County NAACP MLK March

The Houston County NAACP Branch #5203 will host its annual MLK march in Perry Monday. The march will start in front of Oldfield Baptist Church on Houston Lake Road and end at New Hope Baptist Church on Washington Street. The march will be followed by a program featuring guest speaker Dr. Daryl J. Vining, Sr., senior pastor of Hebron Fellowship Baptist Church in Byron.

  • When: Monday, Jan. 16 at 9 a.m.

  • Where: Oldfield Baptist Church on Houston Lake Road

Living the Dream In Worship event

Greens Tabernacle Church will host an event Sunday night to honor the life of the Rev. King. The event features the Rev. Lisa M. Watson as keynote speaker

  • When: Sunday, Jan. 15 at 6 p.m.

  • Where: Greens Tabernacle Church on Bloomfield Road in Macon

Mentors Project Meet and Greet

June O’Neill and the Mentors Project of Bibb County will host a meet-and-greet event Friday night at Serenity in downtown Macon. The event is aimed at bringing new members to the program.

  • When: Friday, Jan. 13 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

  • Where: Serenity on Poplar Street in downtown Macon
