Michigan wine month: Events to check out in Detroit

May is Michigan Wine Month, and in honor of the designation, the Michigan Wine Collaborative is presenting Taste Michigan Invades the D with a host of events May 17-19.

On May 17, the collaborative is joining with various Detroit restaurants to offer multiple-course tasting menus paired with wines from Michigan. Some will features the winemakers themselves. For example, Shady Lane Cellars executive winemaker Kasey Wierzba will be featured at an event at Freya.

More than a dozen restaurants and wine bars are hosting events. They includes Ash Bar at the Siren Hotel, Brix, Detroit Shipping Company, Freya, House of Pure Vin, Mudgie's, Motor City Wine, the Norwood, Presley's Kitchen & Bar, Savannah Blue, Sullivan's Steakhouse and Takoi. (One event takes place on May 16 at Corktown's Alpino with O'Brien Vineyards.

For information and tickets to specific tastings, visit tastemichigan.org.On May 18 from 3 to 7 p.m., Michigan Wine Collaborative, Vintage Michigan Wine Club and Taste Michigan will present Uncork Me Michigan at Comerica Park to showcase Michigan-made wines, cider and meads. This inaugural event will feature more than 30 Michigan-based makers with unlimited wine sampling. It's $55 (plus fees) per person and includes a commemorative tasting glass. A $10 (plus fees) designated driver ticket is also available. Tickets are available at eventbrite.com.

The wine weekend concludes on May 19 with the second annual MichiganWine Expo at the Royce. Six Michigan wineries will be featured and offering a selection of tastings and discounts on all wines. Time slots available are 2-3:30 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m.
