Michigan vs. Penn State final score, results, highlights: Wolverines grind out win on ground

Rod Moore, Kenneth Grant, Mike Sainristil, and Michael Barrett of the Michigan Wolverines react to a play against the Penn State Nittany Lions during the first half at Beaver Stadium on November 11, 2023 in State College, Pennsylvania.

There was so much talk about Michigan vs. Penn State heading into the game that wasn't centered on the game itself, that once the game started it felt like both teams were trying to make a statement on the field.

Michigan and Penn State both made concerted efforts to move the ball on the ground, and both sides found success. Michigan rushed for 227 yards, whereas Penn State rushed for 164. That's compared to a total of 134 yards passing from both sides combined in Michigan's 24-15 win.

The two defenses held up about as well as could be expected, but the reality is Michigan simply broke more plays. Kaytron Allen sprung once for Penn State, whereas Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards — both of whom have struggled to find daylight for Michigan this season — were able to get into the Penn State secondary with more frequency.

The result was a win in which Michigan's defense throttled the Penn State offense for most of the clock and the Wolverines rushed 32 straight times to end the game. J.J. McCarthy, who has some of the shortest Heisman odds in the country, seemed to be hobbled at times, and the Penn State pass rush was ferocious. That led to Michigan completely negate it by not passing at all.

After the game, acting head coach Sherrone Moore was emotional, dropping multiple curses and stumping for Michigan, which has been criticized for its schedule leading into this game.

All things told, it's clear Michigan had a mission in this game to leave no doubt. For Penn State's part, James Franklin's decision to go for it on fourth-and-5 from his own 30-yard line fell incomplete, and on the next play Michigan struck with a 30-yard touchdown run from Corum that all but iced the game. It was another tough loss for a Penn State team that has run into scarlet and blue walls time and time again in recent years. Drew Allar found no answers for the Michigan defense when forced to pass.

Michigan vs. Penn State live updates, highlights

Final Score: Michigan 24, Penn State 15

3:14 p.m. -- With no timeouts left for Penn State, Corum bursts up the middle again and that will end it. Michigan celebrates on the field, and the Wolverines are going to move to 10-0 and 7-0 in the Big Ten.

3:13 p.m. -- Michigan continues to dive ahead as Penn State takes its timeouts. Michigan will have third-and-5.

3:11 p.m. -- Michigan recovers the onside kick, specifically Sainristil.

3:09 p.m. -- Allar now hits Theo Johnson with a nice throw between a pair of defenders. Penn State comes out in the T and shifts out with a swinging gate. Penn State fails to convert, and that just about does it.

3:08 p.m. -- Penn State now down inside the Michigan 10, with 2:03 left. Third-and-7 upcoming after an Allar incompletion.

3:05 p.m. -- Penn State is going up-tempo but simply isn't moving fast enough. It is down in Michigan territory but with 2:53 left, there needs to be more urgency.

3:01 p.m. -- Michigan picks off Allar's next pass, and if that call stands THAT might ice it. However, the offense is coming off as the play is reviewed and Penn State is jogging back out.

Touchdown Michigan: Michigan 24, Penn State 9

2:58 p.m. -- Yet another run for Michigan up the middle to Corum, and he scores from 30 yards out. That might not completely ice the game. But it's pretty close.

2:55 p.m. -- Allar missed two passes here on second and third down, and Penn State stays out to go for it. 4:25 left, and Allar throws it to no one. Penn State turns it over, and Michigan starts at the Penn State 30.

2:53 p.m. -- Michigan runs AGAIN on third-and-2 and gets stacked up, and Michigan will punt again with under five minutes left. Penn State starts at its own 26-yard line.

2:51 p.m. -- Michigan got stuffed up on a first-down run and then takes a timeout on second down with 6:21 left.

2:47 p.m. -- This game has turned into a tennis match, with yet another Penn State punt. It could be a defensive struggle or simply a struggle.

2:42 p.m. -- ICYMI: Penn State had a bit of fun at Michigan's expense earlier for the sign-stealing scandal after a big stop.

2:40 p.m. -- McCarthy is hobbled after the past few plays, and Michigan tried to run on third-and-9 as McCarthy limped away from the play. Potentially big development and Michigan punts to the Penn State 12.

2:36 p.m. -- These jumbo Michigan sets for Michigan are proving problematic. Both teams are well over 100 yards on the ground, and Michigan converted another third down with a straight rush. Michigan comes out jumbo on the next play on first down, and McCarthy has an incompletion erased by a flag for pass interference. Penalties and discipline becoming a problem for Penn State this quarter.

2:30 p.m. -- On third-and-13, Allar finally takes a shot to KeAndre Lambert-Smith, but the receiver was locked up. Penn State is forced to punt, and Michigan gets the ball back at its own 31-yard line as the crowd remains frustrated.

2:29 p.m. -- Penn State went flea flicker after a 7-yard first-down run, and Michigan did not bite. Allar threw it away and was hit with an intentional grounding. Tough break for the Nittany Lions.

2:26 p.m. -- Michigan's streak of not throwing a pass in the half continues. Michigan runs on third-and-6 and comes up just short, and Michigan will punt. Penn State has a nice return but a flag is thrown, so the Nittany Lions will start from their own 28-yard line.

2:22 p.m. -- Michigan wound up in third-and-6 to start the quarter, and had to burn a timeout to avoid a delay of game. Play nearly went off, but they'll get a chance to regroup.

End of Third Quarter: Michigan 17, Penn State 9

2:18 p.m. -- Penn State elects to punt, and a dive ahead from Michigan takes us to the end of the third.

2:13 p.m. -- Allar again went to the flat on third-and-8, and Michigan stacked up Penn State. Franklin goes for it on fourth-and-2 with yet another empty backfield from its own 45-yard line. Franklin takes a timeout after some confusion, and they'll talk it over. Tough sequence there.

2:11 p.m. -- Penn state does a great job to counter a house blitz from Michigan with a naked boot out to the sidelines for a first down. Next play falls incomplete, and it'll be second-and-10 for Penn State.

Field Goal Michigan: Michigan 17, Penn State 9

2:02 p.m. -- Michigan again tries to run on third down, but Edwards got stopped at the four. Turner buries the field goal, and Michigan goes up eight after the fumble.

2 p.m. -- McCarthy ran again for nine to make it first-and-goal, but Michigan loses three on the next play. McCarthy gives to Corum who gets two, and tough third-and-goal upcoming.

1:57 p.m. -- On the next third down, Michigan got stacked up and is going to go for it from the PSU 29. McCarthy rolled out, had nothing downfield, made a man miss, and converted on fourth down! Just a great individual play to keep Michigan's offense on the field.

1:55 p.m. -- Michigan found itself in third-and-short for that series, but Corum powers forward to keep the drive alive. With 10 minutes in the third, Michigan is up to the Penn State 38-yard line.

1:51 p.m. -- With an empty backfield, Allar went designed run on another third down. But he gets stripped and Michigan recovers! Brutal bounce for Allar and the Nittany Lions, and Michigan gets the ball back at the Penn State 49.

1:50 p.m. -- Allar against sees Michigan break contain on a three-man rush and he runs for a first on third-and-5. Good run there, and that's something Michigan will have to continue to adjust to.

1:48 p.m. -- Penn State again comes out rushing, and Singleton goes up the middle for five. That continues to be a key part of the Nittany Lions' game.

Halftime: Michigan 14, Penn State 9

This game started as a slugfest and is shaping up to be one. Both of these teams clearly came in with a directive: Run the ball. Both passing games are living on the second level, with not a lot going on over the top, and the run games have been start-and-stop. Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards have broken big runs for Michigan, while Kaytron Allen has done the same for Penn State. It's too soon to say this is going to be a final possession game. But both teams have answered calls when necessary, and there's no reason to think that won't continue.

Touchdown Penn State: Michigan 14, Penn State 9

1:23 p.m. -- Penn State fails to convert the two-point conversion, but big series all the same.

1:22 p.m. -- Next play, Allar uses his legs the more conventional way and scrambles up the middle for six! Those two fourth down calls end up being huge, and Penn State's offense remains on the field.

1:21 p.m. -- Penn State converts on a pitch and pass back to Allar for four yards. There has never been a more complicated four yards than that.

1:20 p.m. -- Penn State is going to go for it on fourth down again after another three-play stop. Franklin takes a timeout with 1:07 in the half, and it's time to make a choice.

1:16 p.m. -- So much for the crowd. Some boo-birds start to rain down as Michigan stops Penn State on three straight plays. Penn State lines up on fourth-and-6 but calls a timeout before lining up again. Allar gets some heat but finds Kaden Saunders for a big first down, and now Penn State is back in tempo.

1:15 p.m. -- Allen brings the crowd back into it and busts out a 34-yard run down to the Michigan 41. Huge response to give Penn State a jolt.

Touchdown Michigan: Michigan 14, Penn State 3

1:11 p.m. -- Wow. After all of that, Michigan gives to Edwards on third down and he scores from 22 yards out. Michigan's ground game was a difference maker that drive, and the Wolverines extend the lead.

1:08 p.m. -- Penn State's crowd is having an impact. Michigan spends its second timeout on third-and-11 and will have to regroup.

1:02 p.m. -- After a first down completion to Johnson, Michigan turns to the ground and Corum breaks a huge run on an off-tackle rush! Corum goes 44 yards down the Penn State 21, and Michigan is back in business.

12:57 p.m. -- No brainer punt there, and Michigan starts from its own 22-yard line.

12:56 p.m. -- The Penn State running game continues to chug. Kaytron Allen powers forward for nine, and the Nittany Lions playbook is wide open on second down. Allar goes screen to Malick Meiga, and great tackle from Moore makes it third down. PSU then goes tempo but takes its time collecting information at the line. Empty backfield, and Allar powers forward inches short of a first. Tough break there for Penn State.

Touchdown Michigan: Michigan 7, Penn State 3

12:52 p.m. -- Michigan then goes straight dive, and Corum scores from three yards out to give Michigan the lead. Nothing special there from the Wolverines, but big answering series.

12:50 p.m. -- On third-and-8, Michigan goes screen to Morgan for 19 yards down to the Penn State 6-yard line. This was a play after a similar screen was blown up. Edwards then dives to the Penn State 3-yard line, and a flag for illegal sub on Penn State keeps it first down for Michigan.

12:47 p.m. -- Michigan starts the quarter in a big way with a big run from Edwards down to the Penn State 27-yard line. Corum then goes up the middle for five, and Michigan's ground game is starting to potentially find its stride.

End of First Quarter: Penn State 3, Michigan 0

12:43 p.m. -- Michigan converts on a power run for McCarthy, who runs for 13 and the first. Definitely an interesting call, and that ends the first.

12:42 p.m. -- Michigan's running game is being given fits. Two straight runs have Michigan in third-and-10 yet again, and Penn State will be able to pin its ears back.

Penn State Field Goal: Penn State 3, Michigan 0

12:36 p.m. -- PSU goes fade on third down, and Dante Cephas can't haul it in. Penn State settles for a field goal, and Michigan goes down 3-0.

12:34 p.m. -- Penn State went jumbo again and tried to beat Michigan outside, but the defense was too fast. PSU has second-and-goal from the 3, and Allar has to throw it out of the end zone. Third down upcoming.

12:32 p.m. -- On a third-and-1 from the Michigan 5-yard line, Penn State went with a jumbo Wing-T and Allar dives forward. He got the first down by an inch, and Penn State is knocking on the door.

12:30 p.m. -- Singleton is the key operator for PSU on this drive. After a Michigan pass interference, Singleton goes inside for another six and Allar runs down to the Michigan 11-yard line after a great escape act.

12:28 p.m. -- Singleton then powers ahead for another first. Good series here for the Nittany Lions, up to Michigan's 39-yard line.

12:27 p.m. -- Allar gets the Penn State offense moving with a completion over the middle that gets the Nittany Lions toward midfield. Singleton then plunges up the middle for five for Penn State's first first down win of the game.

12:23 p.m. -- This game has the makings of a defensive struggle, as Michigan punts again. A running into the kicker was waved off as the player was blocked into him, which wipes out what would have been a Michigan first. Penn State has the ball back, and it's another possession switch.

12:15 p.m. -- Penn State also starts behind schedule. A 1-yard run and an incompletion to the far side of the field go incomplete, then Allar spikes one into no-man's land. Michigan forces a three-and-out, and Penn State will punt to start the game.

12:11 p.m. -- Penn State has Michigan behind the sticks on the next set of downs, helped along by a Michigan false start. On third-and-8, Michigan lined up quickly. McCarthy gets sacked to end the series, and Michigan has to punt to start the game.

12:09 p.m. -- McCarthy's first pass is complete to Barner for a first down. The crowd in Happy Valley is loud.

12:08 p.m. -- We are underway in University Park, and Michigan starts with the ball at its own 25-yard line.
