Michigan still has more than 60 print newspaper publications

Print is not dead.

It is unquestionable that the technological era has changed the way news is written, published and consumed. Throughout the 18th century, newspapers spread like wildfire through the colonies ensuring consistent communication and information sharing across the growing country.

Over the course of history, Michigan has been home to hundreds of newspaper publications and today the Michigan Press Association stands 170 members strong, including 68 online-only and college publications.

Below is a list of more than 60 publications across the state continuing their storied legacy of ensuring the voices and stories of Michiganders are heard and shared in print each day, week or month.

Here’s where to find a newspaper near you:

Southwestern Michigan

The Niles Daily Star has served as Berrien County’s daily newspaper since 1895.

The Holland Sentinel, a USA Today affiliate, publishes coverage of Ottawa and Allegan Counties online and in print daily.

The Grand Haven Tribune dates back to 1885 and provides a weekly print publication covering northwest Ottawa County.

The Daily Reporter, a USA Today affiliate, publishes daily news for Michigan’s Branch County.

The Rockford Squire has served as Rockford’s free weekly newspaper since 1871 and currently serves more than 15,000 readers.

Lazo Cultural, founded in 2021 as a division of HispanoUSA, focuses on news important to Michigan’s Latino communities with a monthly magazine.

The Battle Creek Enquirer, a USA Today affiliate, publishes daily news for Michigan’s northwest Calhoun County.

El Vocero Hispano, a Spanish newspaper based in Grand Rapids, has provided news for West Michigan’s Latino community for nearly 30 years.

South County News, established in 2013, opened in direct response to the closing of the former hometown weekly the Commercial-Express.

The Albion Recorder has been a staple in downtown Albion for more than 150 years, with its daily print available at most grocery, gas station chains and local stores.

The County Journal prints weekly on Saturdays in Charlotte, Michigan to almost 50,000 people across eight communities.

Southeastern Michigan

The Exponent, founded in 1881 in Brooklyn, Michigan serves as both a weekly print newspaper and printing facility.

The Daily Telegram, a USA Today affiliate, publishes daily news for Michigan’s Lenawee County.

La Prensa was founded in 1989 and is the oldest regional weekly bilingual Latino newspaper. With more than 75,000 weekly readers, La Prensa is available on a subscription basis and can be found at Latino dining, entertainment, retail and specialty stores among other public facilities.

The Fowlerville News & Views has covered the Fowlerville, Webberville and Howell areas for more than 30 years with its weekly newspaper.

The Argus Press, established in 1854, can trace its lineage back to the nation’s earliest newspapers. The fourth-generation, family-owned publication provides news in both print and online.

The Chaldean News is celebrating its 20th anniversary of recording and celebrating Chaldean heritage and history and publishes a monthly print magazine.

The Times Herald, a USA Today affiliate, publishes daily news for Michigan’s St. Clair County.

Pride Source is the only news magazine dedicated to coverage of and for Michigan’s LGBTQ+ community. The bi-weekly print publication can be found online and at more than 600 locations across the state.

The Monroe News, a USA Today affiliate, publishes daily news for Michigan’s Monroe County.

The Detroit Jewish News, founded in 1942, is a nonprofit newspaper organization responsible for its weekly print editions and the digitization and publication of 100 years of Jewish Detroit history.

The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News, both USA Today affiliates, are Detroit’s major daily print newspapers. Operating under a joint operating agreement since 1986, the Detroit News publishes six papers per week with the Detroit Free Press producing the city’s only Sunday paper.

Metro Times has served as Detroit’s premier alternative arts and culture newspaper since 1980 and currently has more than 500,000 print subscribers.

The Belleville-Area Independent produces a weekly publication each Thursday for Belleville and the Charter Township of Van Buren.

Dearborn Press & Guide, established in 1918, is the constant reliable news voice for Dearborn and Dearborn Heights. Print papers can be found at all major gas stations and grocery chains.

The Hillsdale Daily News, a USA Today affiliate, publishes daily news for Michigan’s Hillsdale County.

Grosse Pointe Times, founded in 1981, is one of C&G Newspapers’ 21 bi-weekly publications serving Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.

Grosse Pointe News has published newsweekly for all the Pointes since 1940.

Arab American News, established in 1984, publishes weekly bilingual print newspapers representing the Arab American community of southeastern Michigan.

Livingston Daily Press & Argus, a USA Today affiliate, publishes daily news for Michigan’s Livingston County.

Michigan Chronicle has informed metro Detroit residents with vital news coverage for more than 80 years. The weekly paper is available on a subscription basis or can be purchased at most major convenience stores and gas stations.

The Hamtramck Review traces its lineage back to the founding newspapers of the Hamtramck area and today prints its paper each Friday.

The Polish Weekly Tygodnik Polski, established in 1904 as the first Polish newspaper in Detroit, became the primary newspaper for the political, cultural and social of Michigan’s local Polish American community.

Mid-Michigan

Cadillac News has been publishing since 1872 and today serves a readership throughout Wexford, Osceola, Missaukee and eastern Lake Counties with a daily print newspaper.

The Houghton Lake Resorter, founded in 1940, merged with the Roscommon County Herald-News in 2009 to cover all of Roscommon County in its weekly print paper.

Clare County Cleaver, established in 1881, publishes a weekly print edition while also operating as a full-service print shop.

Times Indicator provides news for Newaygo County weekly in print and online.

The Tribal Observer provides new coverage for Michigan’s Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.

The Pinconning Journal has provided news coverage of northern Bay County since 1892 and publishes a print edition weekly.

Northern Michigan

The Alcona County Review has served the northern county of Alcona since 1877. The paper currently offers local news online daily with a digital newspaper emailed to subscribers each week.

The Petoskey News-Review, a USA Today affiliate, publishes daily in Michigan’s Emmet County.

Harbor Light Newspaper, a family-owned weekly based in Harbor Springs, was founded in 1970 and prints weekly on Wednesdays.

The Cheboygan Daily Tribune, a USA Today affiliate, prints daily in Michigan’s Cheboygan County.

The Presque Isle County Advance and Onaway Outlook, which merged in April 2015, has served as the weekly newspaper for Presque Isle County and surrounding school districts since its founding in 1878.

Leelanau Enterprise is the official medium for local government and education reporting in Leelanau County, with a weekly print circulation of about 8,000.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle, founded in 1858, is a daily morning newspaper for 13 counties throughout northwest and lower Michigan.

Traverse City Business News is a monthly business magazine for the Grand Traverse region offering both digital stories and print publications.

Northern Express is northern Michigan’s largest entertainment and lifestyle weekly magazine with more than 90,000 readers per week, and can be found in 625 locations from Manistee to Mackinaw City.

Upper Peninsula

The Great Lakes Pilot has served Grand Marais, Michigan for 25 years — delivering eight publications each year, and can be found at major grocery and gas chains.

The Evening News, a USA Today affiliate, publishes daily news for the U.P.’s Chippewa County.

The Daily Mining Gazette was founded in 1858 and has been producing a daily print newspaper for Houghton County since 1899. Today the paper prints six days a week and is delivered to email inboxes daily.

The Ontonagon Herald is the Upper Peninsula’s oldest operating newspaper publisher, founded in 1881, and publishes every Wednesday.

The Daily Globe prints weekly on Thursdays, providing news coverage of Michigan’s Iron, Gogebic and Ontonagon counties.

The Iron County Reporter prints both a weekly newspaper to 2,400 homes across the county and the Iron County Shopper’s Guide, distributed to 11,000 homes across Michigan’s U.P. and northern Wisconsin.

The Pioneer Tribune has printed news weekly on Thursdays for the U.P.’s central counties since its founding in 2012.

The Mackinac Island Town Crier has operated as Mackinac Island’s local newspaper since 1956. Today the paper publishes 22 times a year and offers online subscriptions.

The St. Ignace News has been the trusted news source for St. Ignace and Les Cheneaux Islands since its founding in 1878. St. Ignace News publishes each Thursday and mails subscriptions to Chippewa, Emmet, Luce and Cheboygan counties.

The Sault Tribe Newspaper was organized by tribal elders more than 30 years ago to print news important to tribal members and their communities.
