Michigan redistricting commission puts forward draft state Senate maps for public comment

Michigan's redistricting commission has put forward several draft Michigan Senate maps for public input after a three-judge federal panel ordered the group of mappers to redraw seven metro Detroit districts, finding that the current lines that run through the city were drawn primarily based on race.

Before the court decides whether to adopt a map drawn by the commission to replace the current one, the commission will solicit input on its drafts as it selects which one to send to the judges for review.

Following the public hearings, the commission will deliberate and decide which map it wants the court to consider for approval by June 27. A court-appointed special master will review the commission's map to help the court decide. The three-judge federal panel has given itself until July 26 to adopt a new Michigan Senate map.
