Michigan police fatally shoot 19-year-old woman near Juneteenth parade, claim she fired first

A Flint, Mich., police officer fatally shot a 19-year-old Black woman near a Juneteenth parade on Saturday.

Michigan State Police said Briana Sykes was driving a car and fired the first shot at the officer, the Detroit Free Press reported. Video posted to social media appeared to show Sykes firing from inside the car before the officer shot back.

The cop was not physically injured, and neither were any bystanders, Michigan State Police said.

Sykes was killed near the route for the city’s Juneteenth parade, state police said. The procession had not yet reached that point in the route and took a detour to its planned destination, according to MLive.com.

Video appeared to show Sykes arguing with the officer while the cop pointed a gun at her car. A shot was heard, and then the officer clearly fired a shot through Sykes car. The officer has not been identified.

Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting, the Free Press reported. The officer is on paid leave.
