Michigan’s Helmet Stickers Will Be Different This Season
Michigan football is among the most tradition-rich programs in college football. This year, the Wolverines are making one slight tweak to one of the most identifiable parts of the team’s famous winged helmets.
From 1969 until 1995, Michigan wore helmet stickers. Lloyd Carr ended the tradition in 1995, but Jim Harbaugh brought it back when he took over the program in 2015.
This year, the stickers will look a bit different. They’ve typically had a Wolverine logo on them, awarded to players for individual achievements. The new design will take on a more personal touch for each individual player.
According to The Detroit News, the new sticker system will have special decals for individual wins, including the program overall victory number for each game, as well as special stickers for rivalry games, all-conference and All-American selections, academic honors, bowl games, and other accomplishments. Captains will also have special stickers.

“We modified the helmet decal and how they’re awarded to basically now tell the story of a player’s entire career,” Michigan associate athletic director Dave Ablauf told The Detroit News.
“It’s a great way to reward the guys. We’ve always given ours players their helmet at the end of the their career, and this provides them with a keepsake that tells the complete story of their career rather than just that final season.”
Each player has already received one sticker with their home area code. That had to be a special moment for players as they embark on a very important season for the Michigan football program.
“Everyone came from somewhere, and this recognizes their hometown, this recognizes all the people they represent, their family, their community where they came from,” Ablauf said. “A lot of guys have talked about how special that is and how unique and it’s meaningful to them.”
Fans of programs like Michigan often resist major changes, especially when it comes to an iconic uniform, but I feel like most can get behind this change that Harbaugh and his staff came up with.
