Michael Fassbender's new movie Kneecap has debuted with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

The film tells the story of a rap trio from Belfast who form in the late 2010s and become the unlikely figureheads of a civil rights movement attempting to save the declining Irish language. They also do a lot of ketamine along the way.

Fassbender plays a father figure turned political martyr, while real-life Kneecap members Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, and JJ Ó Dochartaigh all play themselves.

Rich Peppiatt directs the film after previously helming one of the band's music videos, despite not being an Irish speaker himself.

After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival (the first Irish-language film to do so), critics who have seen it have all posted positive reviews, leading to its 100% rating.

The reviews generally state that Kneecap is a funny biopic with raucous energy and a lot of foul language, but it's also a solid drama about the political situation, although some reviews wish it leaned more towards the latter.

The reviews also point out that Fassbender looks like he's having a great time in the film (as are the rest of the cast), though he's not actually in it all that much.

The film is part of Fassbender's return to acting following a four-year hiatus.

Explaining his break, he said that he was able to pursue his "obsession" with motorsport, stating: "It's an obsession and feels so right as I have no affinity with any other sport. I am super addicted, and I want to go back and do Le Mans again – it was extraordinary."

Kneecap does not have a release window at the time of writing.
