Michael Bublé and Jason Derulo on New Song 'Spicy Margarita' and Collaborating Together (Exclusive)
Worlds collide and magic happens. Jason Derulo and Michael Bublé are opening up about coming together for their new collaboration, "Spicy Margarita."
The two music superstars recently spent some time with ET's Cassie DiLaura to chat about their new single, and their chemistry was on full display as they reflected on how their team-up came to be.
"Well, it all started [when] I asked Michael if he would sing a Christmas song with me," Derulo said.
"'No!' was the answer," Bublé quipped.
"That's exactly what it sounded like and it hurt me to the core," Derulo joked. "But he had a great idea and was like, 'How about if we did the clash of worlds thing? I don't know why more people aren't asking me to bring what I do to a different [musical genre].'"
This desire to stretch vocally and creatively -- and his appreciation for Derulo's talents and sound -- were the real motivation for the collab.
"Really, truthfully, I love him and I loved his music. We've been friends for many years," Bublé shared. "And I always felt there was a great deep connection between the great American song with jazz standards -- that's a root of the music that he makes, this beautiful pop music, you know?"
"I was like, 'Why is no one taking advantage of this and taking these two worlds and collapsing them together?'" Bublé continued. "The only thing is that it's harder to do than people think. So he came, we built interpolation based on sway, and we turned it into this thing."
"He is a great writer, came up with this idea. I got the idea and I knew in 30 seconds it was gonna be a huge hit," Bublé added.
Both Derulo and Bublé have been looking forward to the release of the new single and are gearing up to shoot a music video. For both artists, they feel the song is something special and unique.
"We've both been here for quite a few years, we've really been lucky to have great careers, but it never gets old having a hit song. It doesn't. And there's something that's really special about knowing we worked really hard on this for a long time and this day finally comes where you get to play your art for people," Bublé shared. "No matter what any artist says -- they say, 'I don't care what anybody thinks' -- it feels so good when someone hears something and you see that instant recognition."
According to Derulo, when it comes to certain songs -- "the really, really special ones" -- you know it's something special almost right away when you play it for someone.
"You play it for people and you get a response, right? You can play a bunch of songs for people and people are gonna like it, they're gonna be nice. But when you have a really special song, people are like, 'Oh my god.'"
While "Spicy Margarita" dropped on Thursday, Derulo is also hoping for that sort of feedback for his forthcoming album, Nu King.
"I've been really looking forward to actually releasing this album because it's been five years since I released my last project," Derulo shared. "I put my heart and soul into this project and it's a journey. It's always a journey, but this one feels really special to me in a lot of ways."
Derulo's new album, Nu King, comes out Feb. 16.
