Miami names Overtown street after Hall of Famer from Dolphins’ perfect 1972 season

Miami has named a stretch of Northwest 14th Street in Overtown after Larry Little, the Hall of Fame offensive lineman who helped power the Dolphins’ strong rushing attack during the team’s perfect 1972 season.

Commissioners unanimously approved co-designating Northwest 14th Street between Seventh Avenue and First Avenue as “Larry C. Little Street.” Tears welled in Little’s eyes as many in the audience applauded the gesture, which was sponsored by Commission Chairwoman Christine King.

Former Dolphins wide receiver Nat Moore, who was Little’s roommate when Moore first played for the Dolphins in 1974, joined Little on Thursday as he received the recognition. Moore told commissioners that Little was a key player for a franchise that put Miami and South Florida on the map in professional sports.

“Larry Little was not only on the perfect season team. He was a captain. He was a leader. He was a South Floridian that proved professional sports in South Florida would work,” Moore told commissioners.

King said Little’s sister and the Booker T. Washington Senior High School’s alumni association and several other groups asked her to sponsor the street naming in December.

“They had to be about 40 deep, and they were ready for a fight,” King said. “They didn’t realize that I would know who Larry Little was.”

Little, 77, played for the Dolphins from 1969 to 1980. He won two Super Bowls and was chosen for the Pro Bowl six times. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
