Jean Segura is officially a member of the Miami Marlins.

The club Wednesday night formally announced the signing, a two-year deal for the two-time All-Star infielder with a club option for 2025.

Segura, who turns 33 in March, is set to make $6.5 million in 2023 and $8.5 million in 2024. The club option for 2025 is $10 million and comes with a $2 million buyout if not enacted.

The signing gives Miami a boost to its infield depth. While primarily a middle infielder throughout his 11-year MLB career, Segura is slated to start at third base for the Marlins in 2023 while Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Miguel Rojas play second base and shortstop, respectively.

To make room for Segura, the Marlins designated for assignment infielder Charles Leblanc, who they selected in the minor-league phase of the Rule 5 Draft in December 2021 and hit .263 with a .724 on-base-plus-slugging percentage in 48 games for the big-league club late last season.

Miami has seven players on its 40-man roster who can play a combination of second base, shortstop and third base: Segura, Rojas, Chisholm, Jon Berti, Joey Wendle, Jordan Groshans and Xavier Edwards. Wendle and Chisholm are the only left-handed hitters of the bunch. This made Leblanc expendable.

Prior to signing with Miami, Segura spent the past four seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, who reached the World Series in 2022.

Segura penned a short tribute to the Phillies and their fanbase Wednesday afternoon on his Instagram account a few hours before the signing with the Marlins became official.

“Thank you Philadelphia, to the organization and especially to the fans for the support for 4 years, you will always have a place in my heart,” the message read. “Thank you for living with me the dream of being in a postseason and reaching a world series. God bless you. Thanks to the @marlins for the opportunity let’s go to the mambo.”
