Miami Hurricanes opening day fall camp media viewing over. Quick observatons (more to come)

Welcome to Miami Hurricanes opening day of fall camp.

And for now at least, there’s no bad news.

Unlike new coach Mario Cristobal’s first day of spring practice, when there were many Hurricanes missing with injuries or recuperating from surgeries or limited, Friday’s first fall practice under Cristobal was energy-packed but uneventful — which is a very good thing for Hurricanes fans.

Two players were missing, one of them for good.

The only player who has left the team is former offensive lineman Cleveland Reed, who previously had said he was transferring, only to return to the team, and now leave it. He was a consensus four-star player out of Fort Meade High, and did play sparingly, but never made his mark.

Starting left tackle Zion Nelson, who said earlier this week that he had minor surgery on his left knee to remove loose cartilage, was, as expected, not at practice. He told me on media day he’d be in the weight room rehabbing/working out.

The players that did not start spring because they were hurt or rehabbing were all accounted for. They include receiver Romello Brinson; offensive lineman John Campbell, who for is taking over for Nelson at left tackle; running back Don Chaney Jr, who had major knee surgery and looked good out there today; punter Lou Hedley; defensive end Jabari Ishmael; freshman defensive end Nyjalik Kelly (at 6-4, 240 he looks strong and impressive); safety Kam Kinchens; tailback Jaylan Knighton (He got the first-team carries); offensive lineman Jalen Rivers (Good news because he had major knee surgery also); cornerback Khamauri Rogers; linebacker Chase Smith; cornerback Tyrique Stevenson (expect him to be a starter); and safety Keshawn Washington.

Defensive end Elijah Roberts, who missed a lot of spring with a shoulder injury, was also back.

The true freshman Canes were wearing their new jersey numbers: Blue-chip running back TreVonte’ Citizen has No. 6. He is listed as 6-0 and 215 pounds and looks the part. His legs are thick and he’s powerful.

More freshman roster numbers: Wideout Isaiah Horton, No. 16; cornerback Markeith Williams, 18; cornerback Jaden Harris, 19; cornerback Chris Graves, 22; offensive lineman Anez Cooper, 55; offensive lineman Matthew McCoy, 78; defensive lineman Ahmad Moten, 92.

Former LSU coach/former Canes assistant (way back in the day) Ed Orgeron was hanging with Cristobal at practice. Orgeron’s son Cody is a UM offensive analyst.

Xavier Restrepo, Key’Shawn Smith and Clemson transfer Frank Ladson were the starting receivers. I saw Restrepo drop one, but hey, it’s the first day.

Tyler Van Dyke and backup Jake Garcia looked good for the first day. Third-team Jacurri Brown, a freshman who was here for spring practice, got some of his balls too high. But again, first day.

We’ll be back later after practice and after we speak to Cristobal and a few players.
