Miami Hurricanes add Bethune-Cookman (new coach Ed Reed) to 2023 football schedule

The Miami Hurricanes have added Bethune-Cookman to their 2023 football schedule, the Miami Herald learned Tuesday through multiple sources. The Wildcats announced on Dec. 27 they had “entered an agreement in principle with Pro Football Hall of Famer Ed Reed” to be their football coach.

Reed, the Hurricanes’ legendary safety, most recently served as UM’s “Chief of Staff.’’

Bethune-Cookman, a member of the FCS, would complete UM’s opponents for 2023. The home game is set for Thursday night, Sept. 14, five days after UM’s nonconference home game Sept. 9 against Texas A&M. The Canes play their final nonconference game Sept. 23 at Temple in Philadelphia.

The Canes open the ‘23 season Sept. 2 at home against Miami of Ohio, another nonconference opponent.

UM defeated Bethune-Cookman 70-13 in the 2022 season opener.

With the 2022 football season now over, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday that the league’s 2023 composite football schedule, which includes Miami, will be unveiled Jan. 30. The ACC previously announced Miami’s league opponents this season, and whether the games are home or on the road.

Here are the league opponents the Hurricanes (5-7 in 2022) will play in 2023, whether the games are home or away and how they finished in 2022:

Home (Hard Rock Stadium) — Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-7 overall, 4-4 ACC); Virginia Cavaliers (3-7, 1-6); Clemson Tigers (11-3, 8-0); Louisville Cardinals (8-5, 4-4).

Away — Florida State Seminoles (10-3, 5-3); North Carolina Tar Heels (9-5, 6-2); Boston College Eagles (3-9, 2-6); North Carolina State Wolfpack (8-5, 4-4).

In June, the ACC released its new football schedule model for 2023-2026, which eliminates the Coastal and Atlantic divisions and turns the league into one body of 14 teams. The top two teams, based on conference winning percentage, will compete in the ACC Football Championship Game on Dec. 2 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The new model, per the ACC, will have each league member play three primary opponents annually and face the other 10 league teams twice — once at home and once on the road — during the four-year cycle.

UM’s primary opponents, as previously announced: Florida State, Louisville and Boston College.
