Will Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grier deal for draft picks in Rounds 3 and 4?

MIAMI GARDENS — The Dolphins own a second-round pick, 55th overall, but aren’t scheduled to pick again until the fifth round, more than 100 picks later. They also have a general manager who loves to trade draft picks.

So, is Chris Grier keeping an eye on possible deals to land third- or fourth-round picks?

“We’re open to everything,” Grier said Tuesday.

The Dolphins forfeited their third-round pick because of tampering with Sean Payton and Tom Brady. They traded their fourth-rounder as part of the deal that brought linebacker Bradley Chubb from Denver.

As of now, they have a huge break until their fifth-round pick, 158th overall.

While Grier admitted he wouldn’t mind collecting an extra pick (the Dolphins have a total of six), he added, “But also you don’t want to pass on a good player, if there’s someone there that we all feel very strongly about that can really impact our roster. It’s like, how far can you drop down and still possibly get him? So you always look at those factors.”

If Grier has a particular player in mind when a trade offer comes in, those calculations will be in play in the draft room. Grier cited, for example, the Dolphins landing Javon Holland and Jarvis Landry in Round 2. If such an opportunity presents itself, Grier said, “We’ll take the player.”

Grier’s willingness to trade picks was obvious in 2021 when he made nine deals for picks but also traded away nine selections.

“Some of those conversations are happening now,” Grier said. “You know, where teams call and say, ‘Hey, would you be willing to move down or move up?’ So for the most part, if a deal is too good to pass up, you pull the trigger now, because you never know when those opportunities come and go.

“But usually, most are on draft day because people want to see if the players they are interested in are still there.”

Grier said there has been a “typical” amount of trade chatter among GMs leading up to this draft.
