Miami just set a new heat record. So, when will it cool down? What the forecast says

Did you feel the scorching sun Monday afternoon and wonder why you couldn’t stop sweating?

Good reason: Miami set a high temperature record that had been in place for 60 years. And more records could fall on Tuesday.

With Monday’s reading of 91 degrees at Miami International Airport, the mark beat a record of 88 degrees set on March 6, 1965 — the same year the U.S. Postal Serviced launched the ZIP Code System, according to the National Weather Service in Miami. That record had only been matched once on March 6, 2003.

And the Florida Keys tied all-time highs.

Record high temperatures were tied in Key West and in Marathon on Monday, according to WSVN 7 News. The readings of 86 and 88 degrees respectively matched the records set in March 6, 2003.

“Records, records, records!” WSVN 7 News chief meteorologist Phil Ferro said Monday afternoon on Twitter. “A hot start to the work week with Miami setting a new mark for high temp while both Marathon and Key West tied their all-time highs for today.”

But will it cool down a bit? And if so, how long will it last? Here’s what we know.

‘A little bit of a cool-down’

Much like the day before, Tuesday will be mostly sunny in Miami-Dade and Broward counties with highs in the high-80s and low-90s, and lows in the mid-60s and 70, according to the weather service.

“Tuesday promises to be a SIZZLER!,” Ferro said. “May see record heat again after numerous all time highs reached on Monday.”

But temperatures are expected to cool down a bit during the middle of the workweek, forecasters say.

On Wednesday, highs are expected between the lower- and upper-80s across South Florida. And in the afternoon, temperatures will fall around the upper-70s and 80 in parts of Miami-Dade and Broward with a chance of rain of 30% to 40%. At night, lows are forecast between the upper-60s and 70 degrees.

Temperatures are expected to lower even further on Thursday across South Florida with highs in the mid-70s to 80, and little to no rain. The lows on Thursday night are forecast in the mid-60s.

“We are going to have a little bit of a cool-down due to a back-door cold front,” weather service meteorologist Will Redman told the Miami Herald.

What is the weekend forecast?

This relief is not expected to last long though, according to the weather service.

Friday’s high temperatures are forecast between the upper 70s and lower 80s across the region. And on Saturday and Sunday, residents and visitors will likely experience an uptick in temperature with highs in the lower to mid 80s.
