New Mexico cannabis sales surpass $5 million on 4/20

Apr. 29—State cannabis sales rose by more than $400,000 for this year's 4/20, likely due in part to the day falling on a Saturday.

Statewide sales, according to state Regulation and Licensing Department spokeswoman Andrea Brown, stood at just over $5 million, about $3.6 million of which came from recreational purchases. Just over $1.4 million of this year's April 20 sales are attributed to medical patients.

The number 420 has for decades been associated with marijuana smoking, and as a result, April 20 has become a holiday for many cannabis users. Total sales increased by about $416,000 from last year's April 20, which fell on a Thursday. At the time, adult-use sales came in at just over $2.8 million and medical sales at about $1.8 million.

The first April 20 for legal recreational sales in New Mexico in 2022 saw total sales of $2.2 million, according to the data Brown provided.

This year, the top-performing cities for 4/20 recreational cannabis sales were Albuquerque, which sold $1,079,571 in cannabis; Sunland Park, which sold $430,283; and Hobbs, which sold $265,857. Santa Fe sold $170,453 in recreational cannabis and $109,366 in medical cannabis.
