A loud explosion that rocked parts of Texas on Wednesday, Feb. 15, coincided with sightings of a meteor in the sky, officials say.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said air traffic control officers in Houston received reports from two aircrafts that a meteor was spotted west of McAllen, in southern Texas near the state’s border with Mexico.

While the point of impact is not known yet, residents in several towns in the county reported hearing a loud explosion.

The U.S. National Weather Service Office of Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley said its Geostationary Lightning Mapper, which locates lightning from space, “detected a signal” at 5:23 p.m. despite no thunderstorms in the area.

Calls about the explosion started to come in to the Mission Police Department around 5:25 p.m. Wednesday. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Mission Police Chief Cesar Torres said the department received “hundreds of calls from citizens who heard the earth shake,” according to ValleyCentral.

Calls to the Alton Police Department were “widespread,” Police Chief Jonathan Flores told ValleyCentral.

The El Tejano Starr, a bilingual publication in Rio Grande City, said residents described the bright light in the sky “as falling star or meteor before they heard a loud noise what they described as thunder.”

Some residents shared photos of video on social media of the meteor or sounds of the explosion.
