Mercyhurst University cross country coach leads Erie, Pa. area runners at Boston Marathon

Mercyhurst University cross country coach Michael Williamson was one of three Erie runners who completed Monday’s Boston Marathon in under three hours.

Williamson, 32, had a time of 2 hours, 53 minutes, 35 seconds for the 128th edition of the famed 26.2-mile race. He was the 1,680th runner who crossed the race's famed Boylston Street finish line out of more than 30,000 scheduled starters.

Monday marked the sixth time Williamson participated in a Boston Marathon, the annual highlight of Patriots’ Day festivities throughout New England. Last year, the Punxsutawney native finished it 403rd overall (2:35:25).

Williamson ran cross country for Mercyhurst from 2010-13. He graduated in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in social work.

Erie residents Stephen Parshall, 41, and Harry Balwick, 39, also recorded times below three hours. Parshall's was 2:58:04 and Balwick's 2:58:54.

Cynthia Kuhn, who like Williamson is a Mercyhurst employee, also ran Monday. The 1989 Seneca graduate, a brain cancer survivor, was timed at 3:39:24 in her second straight Boston Marathon appearance.

Kuhn, 53, is scheduled to compete in the Sept. 15 Abbott World Marathon Majors at Sydney, Australia.
