Merced ity officials have named an interim fire chief while they begin the search for a permanent one to replace departing Chief Derek Parker.

Casey Wilson was appointed interim fire chief on Friday to lead the department through the transition. Wilson will oversee administrative services for the Merced Fire Department.

Parker stepped down to take an assistant chief position with the Sacramento Fire Department. Parker’s last day in Merced was Friday.

Parker served as the Merced fire chief for 3 years.

Wilson is also taking over as acting chief on Friday, according to City of Merced spokesperson Jennifer Flachman.

“Interim Chief Wilson brings solid experience to this role, having served this community in all ranks within the organization, including five years in a chief officer role,” said City Manager Scott McBride in a release.

Wilson is a Merced native. He graduated from Le Grand High School and Merced College.

Wilson worked in the Merced Fire Department for 18 years, and he also worked 3 years with Cal Fire. He served 5 years in the chief officer role for Merced Fire Department.

Wilson says he’s looking forward to continue working closely with the department personnel.

“I am honored to step in at this time to ease the transition of leadership,” said Wilson. “I look forward to supporting the momentum of the department’s strategic plan.”

City officials said they will begin a comprehensive search for a new fire chief. Details regarding the recruitment process and timeline will be announced in the coming weeks, according to Flachman.

“With a proven track record of dedication to public safety and commitment to excellence, Wilson is well-positioned to lead the Merced Fire Department during this critical transition,” McBride said.
