Merced County law enforcement remembers lives lost in 9-11 terrorist attacks

Community members and Merced County first responders gathered at the Atwater Community Center on Sunday in recognition of the 21st anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

Police officers, sheriff’s deputies and firefighters attended the somber ceremony as a large American flag was flown overhead from an Atwater Fire Department/Cal Fire truck.

“Today we joined our community in remembering the men and women who lost their lives on September 11, 2001,” The Merced County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

“Words will never be enough to express our heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones. Our lives were forever changed that day, and we will never forget.”

During the ceremony, Atwater Police Department officers served as honor guard members alongside Merced County Sheriff deputies.

“On that fateful day, 2,977 people were killed in the deadliest terrorist attack in American history,” the Atwater Police Department said in a Facebook post. “May they never be forgotten.”
