Aladdin actor Mena Massoud has given a disappointing update on a prospective sequel to the 2019 film.

The actor, who starred in the lead role of the Disney live-action remake, responded to a fan question about Aladdin 2 on Twitter, revealing that he wasn't expecting to be reprising the role anytime soon.

"Very unlikely at this point," he wrote.

Following its release, Aladdin managed to gross over $1 billion at the box office. Will Smith and Naomi Scott also starred alongside Massoud, playing the Genie and Princess Jasmine respectively.

Massoud's comments will no doubt be a disappointment to fans, coming just weeks after director Guy Ritchie gave his thoughts on a sequel.

"I'd very much like to," Ritchie told Collider.

"I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that experience. It was a great experience. That whole Disney thing, as you can imagine, is such a professional outfit. Just from that perspective, it was so much fun," he continued.

"I would very much like to, we'll wait and see. We have been kicking some ideas around for some time now, but it'd be great to do, it would be great to go back there."

Ritchie's comments echoed that of producer Dan Lin, who said in 2019 that he believed there was "more story" to tell.

"I would say resoundingly audiences want to see more. They've watched this movie multiple times," Lin told Comic Book.

"We have lots of fan letters about people who really go back and they bring their friends and bring their family, and so we feel like there's more story to tell."

Meanwhile, Massoud is set to star in upcoming boxing drama Giant, alongside House of the Dragon star Paddy Considine.
