Memphis weather: Storms could being heavy rain, flooding and tornadoes to Mid-South

Severe weather is set to hit the Mid-South tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

From 8 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday, the area is expected to get up to two inches of rain. While the rain would likely be bearable if it was by itself, the rain is bringing strong winds, hail, possible tornadoes and flash flooding with it.

The good news: After the weather Wednesday night, the sun will come out and stick around for the weekend.

Severe weather Wednesday evening for Memphis

On Wednesday evening, Memphis will be in the enhanced risk zone for storms. The weather service warns of wind gusts reaching up to 80 miles per hour, tennis ball sized hail, possible strong tornadoes, and flash flooding.

The timing for the inclement weather is from 8 p.m. Wednesday night to 7 a.m. Thursday morning.

"Some of these thunderstorms moving into the Mid-South are expected to be severe with damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes possible," said the National Weather Service's forecast discussion,

The discussion goes on to say that Wednesday night is the most likely time for severe weather with damaging winds and tornadoes to occur for the next few days.

Five day forecast Memphis

Wednesday is when the heavy rain arrives. There is a 40% chance of rain during the day and a 90% chance of rain at night. The high will be 84 degrees and the low will be 67 degrees.

Thursday has a high of 82 degrees and a low of 58 degrees. There is a 30% chance of rain during the day and a 20% chance of rain mainly before 1 a.m. Friday morning.

Friday is the first sunny day this week with a high near 73 degrees and a low near 54 degrees.

Saturday has sunny skies with a high near 77 degrees and a low near 57 degrees.

Sunday will have a high near 80 degrees and a low near 61 degrees. Skies will be sunny during the day and cloudy at night.
