Memphis weather: See the latest on power outages, road closures as winter storm hits

Winter weather has arrived in the Mid-South and the National Weather Service has forecast 4 inches, or even more, of snow and extreme cold over the next few days.

Memphis power outages

As of 8 p.m. Sunday, Memphis Light, Gas & Water was reporting 10 outages impacting 210 customers across Shelby County.

MLGW officials and other local officials will be holding a weather press conference at 3:30 p.m. on Monday to discuss its response to sub-freezing temperatures and energy conservation measures. It is possible customers could be asked to conserve electricity in the coming days.

Memphis road closures

The winter weather has started to impact the roadways with isolated road closures in places due to ice or vehicle crashes. However, no widespread road closures have yet been reported.

As of Sunday afternoon, the Memphis Police Department had implemented its inclement weather crash policy. That policy asks drivers to only call emergency services if a vehicle crash results in injuries. If a collision does not result in injuries, drivers should take the following steps:

  • Exchanges names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance information and tag numbers of the vehicles involved.

  • Take photographs of the damage and tag numbers of vehicles involved.

  • Both drivers should call the nearest police station or the Memphis Police Traffic Office to report the crash within 5 days.

The weather service advised against traveling unnecessarily and to drive slowly, leaving ample space between your vehicles and other vehicles as roads and bridges could be icy.

Are schools, businesses closed in Memphis?

Schools, public offices and some businesses were already scheduled to be closed Monday due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools said it would share information about any school closures over the long weekend as the full impact of the winter weather becomes clearer.

The National Civil Rights Museum announced the museum would be closed to in-person visitors Monday because of the inclement weather. The museum's planned Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration will be entirely virtual. You can find all the details about how to watch here.

"Passengers should check frequently with their airlines for the latest scheduling information. The airlines will have the most up-to-date information on scheduling at Memphis and elsewhere across the country.
