Memphis weather includes threat of flooding, strong storms over Memorial Day weekend

Severe weather and the threat of flooding are set to continue in Memphis for the holiday weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, a flood watch is in effect for Memphis until Monday, May 27 at 7 a.m. with the greatest chances for severe storms on Friday and Sunday evening.

Here's what to know this weekend:

Thunderstorms expected Friday

On Friday, there is a high of 84 degrees and a low of 68 degrees. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. The chance of precipitation for the day is 70% and 60% for the evening. Showers and thunderstorms are likely after 3 a.m.

According to the weather service, the hours of caution are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. Storms will be short-lived and/or not widespread. It is possible for a tornado to occur. The primary threats are 60 mile an hour wind gusts and ping pong sized hail.

Saturday has a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms primarily after 1pm. The high will be near 86 degrees, and the low will be near 72 degrees. There is no rain predicted for the evening.

The National Weather Service has the hours of caution set from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Damaging winds and hail are the primary threats during this time period. Storms are expected to be limited in duration, coverage and/or intensity.

Stronger severe storms likely Sunday in Memphis

Sunday will have a high of 89 degrees and a low of 71 degrees. There is a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. For the evening, there is a 60% chance of rain.

Sunday evening is the primary time for caution. Storms will be short lived and/or localized. The primarily threats are damaging winds and hail.
