How to prepare for a freeze? Remember the four P's

The National Weather Service for Memphis advises to take caution and remember the four p's: people, pets, plants, and pipes.

In cold weather, people should cover exposed skin. Wind can make 30 degrees feel like 15 degrees in some instances, so the less skin exposure, the better. It is also best to layer up. People should make sure to keep their internal body temperatures high so there is little risk of getting sick in the days after.

It is best to bring pets and plants inside during freezing weather. Pets, much like humans, can't be exposed to cold weather for long periods of time without having lasting effects. If there are small plants you want to keep alive during the winter season, bring those in.

The NWS also recommends wrapping your pipes to make sure they don't freeze. This can be done with heat tape or thermostatically controlled heat cables. If you plan on traveling for Halloween, you can also turn off the water and drain the pipes to make sure they don't freeze.

What temperature is a freeze risk?

Anything under 32 degrees will be considered at risk for a freeze. The 29 to 32-degree range is considered a light freeze. Fortunately, Memphis doesn't have to worry about the moderate and severe freezes this week.
