Memphis Grizzlies lose to Dallas Mavericks, fourth straight defeat to start season

Desmond Bane stood in the Memphis Grizzlies huddle and spoke passionately as the team trailed by double digits in the fourth quarter against the Dallas Mavericks. The team responded by getting the once 17-point deficit down to four.

But then the Mavericks had their own response. Dallas star Luka Doncic scored 35 points and finished with a triple-double as the Mavs defeated the Grizzlies 125-110 Monday at FedExForum.

Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies with 30 points. Marcus Smart added 23.

The four-game losing streak to start the season is the Grizzlies' longest since 2004.

Fourth quarter

FINAL: Mavs 125, Grizzlies 110

6:13 left: The Grizzlies were in danger territory before Jaren Jackson Jr.'s personal 5-0 run. They'll need much more of that to end their three-game losing streak. Dallas leads 110-100.

10:34 left: Tim Hardaway Jr. hit another 3-pointer, and Memphis now trails 102-88. Hardaway has 21 points off the bench.

Third quarter

End of the third quarter: The Grizzlies are trailing the Mavs 97-86. Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. have 23 points apiece, but Dallas is getting production from its starters and bench.

Grizzlies searching for bench production

56.9 left: The Grizzlies are getting outscored 32-11 in bench points. Injuries have hurt the roster's depth, but Memphis needs its bench to provide a spark. Grizzlies are down 97-86.

4:03 left: Both teams are trading baskets. Mavs role players continue to give the Grizzlies fits. Derrick Jones Jr. is up to 20 points. Dallas leads 85-80.

7:14 left: Jaren Jackson Jr. knocks down a 3-pointer to make it a two-point game. Jackson is up to 19 points. Dallas leads 75-73.

Grizzlies defense searching for answers

8:42 left: The Grizzlies are trailing 75-68. After Luka Doncic made the first Mavs basket of the quarter, Memphis has done a better job of sending crowds at him. However, his teammates are stepping up. Derrick Jones Jr. has 14 points.

Second quarter

Halftime: Mavs 67, Grizzlies 61. The Grizzlies were just hit with a wave of elite shot-making from Luka Doncic, who is up to 22 points at halftime. Desmond Bane leads the Grizzlies with 18 points.

Memphis is shooting 50% overall and 8-for-20 on 3-pointers. Dallas has made 15 of 26 3-pointers.

Desmond Bane shining

3:28 left: Desmond Bane is playing like the No. 1 offensive option. He has been efficient on both ends. He is shooting 7-for-8 and leading the Grizzlies with 17 points.

5:46 left: Grant Williams is back in the game and making 3-pointers. The Mavs lead 48-42. Williams has made four of five 3-pointers.

9:02 left: Timeout Grizzlies. Just like that, the Mavs have responded with an 8-0 after a Derrick Jones Jr. 3-pointer.

10:11 left: Memphis leads 39-32 after a Jaren Jackson Jr. free throw. This is a big stretch for both teams. With Luka Doncic out of the game, the Mavs are hoping to keep the game close, but the Grizzlies want to pull away.

First quarter

Fire hot from deep

End of first quarter: Memphis leads 36-30 after Desmond Bane's buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the quarter. This game is starting similarly to Saturday's contest against the Washington Wizards from the standpoint of a Grizzlies opponent getting hot from deep. The difference this time is Memphis is playing better offense. The Mavs made eight 3-pointers in the first quarter but shot 10-for-24. Memphis is shooting 58.3% and has made six threes.

4:09 left: Memphis fell down 19-12 before going on a 6-0 run.

David Roddy seems to like playing the Mavericks. He scored four of the last six Grizzlies points on a layup and smooth fadeaway. Xavier Tillman score the last basket that led to a Mavs timeout. Dallas leads 19-18.

8:47 left: The Grizzlies are trailing 11-6, but one Mavs players is doing most of the damage. Grant Williams has hit three open 3-pointers.

Marcus Smart draws Luka Doncic assignment

11:03 left: The Grizzlies are starting the game with Marcus Smart guarding Luka Doncic. This wil be the best test yet of what Smart can bring to the Grizzlies as an individual defender. Still, it will take a team effort to slow down Doncic.

FIGURING IT OUT: It's still early in season, and Memphis Grizzlies are feeling things out

Slow starts to the season aren't uncommon for the Memphis Grizzlies, but losing three straight games to begin a season is something they haven't done since 2004. The Grizzlies are hoping to end that against the Dallas Mavericks at 7 p.m. CT Monday night at FedExForum.

Memphis is still short-handed. Santi Aldama (right ankle sprain) and Luke Kennard (concussion protocol) are both out. That means the team will continue to rely on David Roddy, Jake LaRavia and John Konchar to help bolster the bench unit.

Mavericks guard Luka Doncic is off to a great start that includes a 49-point game against the Brooklyn Nets. Guard Kyrie Irving is out, so the Grizzlies will be all hands on deck trying to slow down Doncic.
