Memphis Grizzlies fill two-way roster spot with Scottie Pippen Jr., son of former NBA star

The Memphis Grizzlies are signing Scotty Pippen Jr. to a two-way contract, the team announced on Tuesday.

NBA teams are allowed to have up to three two-way contracts on their roster. Memphis created an opening when Vince Williams Jr. was rewarded with a multi-year contract last week after playing on a two-way contract.

Pippen, the son of former Chicago Bulls star and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame member Scottie Pippen, has been one of the top guards in the G League for the South Bay Lakers. Listed at 6-foot-1, Pippen makes up for his height with elite athleticism at the guard position.

In 17 games with the G League Lakers, Pippen has averaged 20.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game. He's shooting 32.9% on 3-pointers and averages 2.3 steals per game. Pippen averaged 22.2 points per game last season in the G League for the Lakers. He also played six games for the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA during the 2022-23 season.

Pippen went undrafted in 2022 after playing three seasons at Vanderbilt. He established himself as one of the top players in the SEC by earning All-SEC First-Team honors in the last two of his three seasons.

Adding Pippen gives the Grizzlies (15-25) more guard depth. Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose are all out with injuries. Fellow two-way player Jacob Gilyard is the lone healthy point guard on the roster alongside of Pippen.
