Memphis Grizzlies provide injury updates for Derrick Rose, Xavier Tillman Sr.

Derrick Rose's return from a knee injury might not come during the Memphis Grizzlies' two-game homestand this week with games Wednesday and Friday.

According to Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins, Rose remains "week-to-week" with knee injury.

Rose has missed the last three games while dealing with what the Grizzlies described as left knee soreness. He was averaging eight points in 17.8 minutes per game and shooting 32.4% from the field.

”They have been loading him more the last couple of days,” Jenkins said Tuesday. “He did a few things in practice.”

With Rose out, Desmond Bane and Marcus Smart have played most of the minutes on the ball, while Luke Kennard and Jacob Gilyard have also been used in stretches.

Jenkins said that Xavier Tillman Sr. is still “day-to-day” while dealing with knee soreness. Tillman was a late scratch ahead of Sunday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Tillman's absence led to newly signed center Bismack Boyombo getting his first start just four days after joining the Grizzlies. He responded with eight points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks in Sunday's win against the Trail Blazers.

Kennard said that when Biyombo joined the Grizzlies, he stayed after practice and asked certain teammates questions about spacing and where he needed to be. Jenkins added that he is giving Biyombo a mix of the core principles of the offense and defense, plus what the team is learning now.

Joining a team after five games is difficult, but it could be worse. Kennard remembers being traded at the deadline and getting a crash course on joining a team just a little more than a month before the playoffs. Biyombo has also been on teams where players have been traded and have to get adjusted in a short amount of time.

"Being apart of a team earlier, like now, helps a lot," Biyombo said. "You understand who does what, and also you build the chemistry with your teammates. They know the good and bad in you, and vice versa. Therefore, getting out and competing becomes just fun."
