Memorial Day weekend could bring heat records to Miami area. Here’s how hot it may get

On Memorial Day weekend, you’ll have a cookout — and that’s only your feet on the sizzling sidewalk.

Expect near-record heat in Miami and Fort Lauderdale and along the east coast Saturday, Sunday and on the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Miami.

“Monday will be hard to get but we have a pretty good shot of, at the very least, tying the records both tomorrow and Sunday,” weather service meteorologist Chris Fisher told the Miami Herald on Friday.

Here are the target temperatures in the Miami area to meet or break records:

▪ Saturday: The record high was 93 set in 2005.

▪ Sunday: The record high was 94 set in 1949.

▪ Monday: The record high was 96 set in 1902.

With temperatures in the low-90s, the heat index — the “feels-like” temperature — will be around 100 on Saturday and 100 to 105 on Sunday and Monday, with this range expected into the workweek, Fisher said.

If the index hits and holds at 105, the weather service will issue a heat advisory. Either way, stay hydrated, wear protective clothing in the direct sun and get into air conditioning as often as possible.

Will it rain? Isolated to scattered thunderstorms, some with heavy downpours and gusty winds, are possible over the three-day weekend, with Saturday’s 30% chance the highest, according to the weather service.

But the skies will be mostly clear and dry with the next highest chance coming Tuesday night into Wednesday at 40%.
