Memorial Day parade among 14 things to do this weekend in the Galesburg area
It's the final weekend of May which means it's Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial kick-off to summer.
Here are some events going in the Galesburg area this weekend.
Memorial Day Parade
What: The annual Memorial Day Parade in Galesburg will be held Monday morning. The parade will start at Chambers and Main, head west down Main and take a left on Cherry, ending at the courthouse.

Muppet Treasure Island
What: Look forward to Choral Dynamic's "Rolling in the Deep" with Muppet Treasure Island. Set sail for the high seas with Muppet characters and enjoy this fantastical adventure to Treasure Island.

Where: Orpheum Theatre, 57 S. Kellogg St., Galesburg

Knox College Choir & The Knox College Players
What: The Knox College Choir and its sister ensemble the Knox College Players perform Spring concert, "Where the Sun Rises." No tickets or reservations required.
When: 8 p.m. Friday

Drive-In Movie Night
What: Have your kids build their best "box car" for chance to win a prize. Drive in, lights off, grab your goodies and watch the Goonies. After that, get Footloose!

Monoprinting with Nikki Ponce
What: Create prints through the technique of monoprinting. Using various tools and materials, participants will learn to produce one-of-a-kind prints with rich textures, layers and spontaneous marks. For beginners or experienced artists.
When: 10 a.m. to noon Saturday

Finnish Field Day: Hobby Horse Games
What: Children and adults have been riding hobby horses, or stick horses, for centuries for play, to mock elites and for re-enactments. Hobby horsing competitions (where teenagers and young adults mimicked horse competitions) were introduced through Selma Vilhunen's 2017 film "Keppihevosten vallankumous" (Hobby Horse Revolution). Make a hobby horse or bring your own for jumps, races and dressage/dancing. Supplies are limited; reservations are suggested.
When: 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday
Where: Vasa Archives, 109 Bishop Hill St., Bishop Hill
Cost: Hobby horses are $10 each
Richard Scarry Summer Travel Event
What: Go on a scavenger hunt, make a "Thing That Goes" vehicle and enjoy story time.
When: 11 a.m. Saturday
Where: Wordsmith Bookshoppe, 235 E. Main St., Galesburg
Past Curfew 2024 Reunion Show
What: Past Curfew is back for a reunion show. This is their only Illinois show.
When: 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday

Marine Vets MC Blood Stripe Chapter Fun Run
What: Registration is from 11 a.m. to noon. Blessing of the Bikes at the same time. Kick Stands Up at noon. Cash and or prizes at each stop. $100 cash prize at last stop; must be present to win.

Pork Chop Lunch
What: Stop by for a pork chop or hotdog meal. All proceeds go directly to the Fire Department to purchase new equipment.

Afro Brunch
What: African buffets, fashion shows and African vendors.

Strat & Strad
What: Strat & Strad is an unlikely combination of electric rock guitar and classical/folk styled electric violin. The core of the band is the married couple Rosemary (lifelong student of the violin, second violinist of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra) and Aaron (self-taught rhythm/color guitarist). Wine, beer, soda, food and snacks available for purchase. Music will be on the patio; inclement weather will move music indoors. Guests younger than 21 allowed when with an of-age adult.

Knox Piano Chamber Ensemble Recital
What: The Knox Piano Chamber Ensemble under the direction of Ashlee Mack performs their Spring concert featuring works by student composers, Casey Foubert, Morgan Hopkins, Rachel Schonfeld and Amira Siddique. PCE members are K Pham, Amira Siddique, Nanaho Suzuki, Ulpanay Djoldasova, Shino Okamoto, Hannah Tannas, Oscar Gardella and Lyn Scherer.

Caxton Reading Series
What: A literary organization on the Knox College campus, Caxton Club brings a number of poets, novelists, and essayists to campus every term to read their works in a setting open to all members of the community. The club is named after the first English printer, William Caxton. Working closely with the English Department at Knox College, Caxton Club is student-run and with Q&A sessions after most readings, encourages literary discourse on the Knox campus. The reader May 29 is Neal Bell.

Winds and Chamber Brass
What: The Knox-Galesburg Chamber Winds and Chamber Brass perform in joint spring concert for the public. Chamber Winds is directed by Jill Marasa and the Chamber Brass director is Justin Haynes.
