Memorial Day is May 27. Here are the parades, services planned in the Binghamton area

"Decoration Day," better known as Memorial Day, was established five years after the Civil War, according to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as a day to visit the graves of those who had fallen in the line of duty and decorate their graves with flowers.

In 1971, the day we recognize as Memorial Day was made an official holiday, celebrated in the United States on the last Monday in May.

Residents in the Binghamton area will have a chance to attend several parades and other events this weekend to mark the official observance of the holiday in 2024.

What will the weather be like in Binghamton on Memorial Day

The forecast for the long Memorial Day weekend favors Sunday, when mostly sunny skies are expected, and a high temperature near 82, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.

There is a slight chance of showers Saturday, and thunderstorms after 2 p.m.

If you're heading out to a parade or service on Monday, grab your umbrellas and raincoats just in case. Most events are planned for the morning hours, but cloudy skies and showers are expected throughout the day, along with thunderstorms after 2 p.m. The temperature is expected to reach 75.

Here's a list of some of the parades, services and commemorations planned in the area. All events are scheduled for Monday unless otherwise noted.
